On holiday in Wales earlier this year I had a knickerbocker glory. It was lovely but it was made with fresh fruit! Including kiwi fruit!! It's been years since I had one, possibly decades but it should be made with tinned fruit and the juice from the can.

Does anyone remember cafes used to have a juice machine. A clear plastic box full of an orange liquid with an actual orange bobbing around in it. My mum would never buy me a beaker glass of it but I desperately wanted to try some.

A huge summer treat for us was a brown cow - a glass of cola with a scoop of vanilla ice cream floating on top.

That was a coke float in our house. My sisters liked it with cream soda instead of coke, the big weirdos.

Don't recall any kind of cola as a kid. It was Vimto or nothing 🤣

I remember longing for a mr whippy from ice cream vans (a flake was an impossible dream) but only ever being allow an orange or lemon sparkle ice lolly costing 10p - I was one of a large family on a budget.

I still love a Mr Whippy 99. Proper squirty ice cream, unlike that stuff I make like an Italian gelato 😁

Core memory unlocked! The Sparkle was a decent ice lolly and I could but dream of the others on the card. Big Foot, Twoball Screwball, Google Eyes?, and not to forget the top of the lot, the Feast.

I remember Pan Drop mints were not available in NI in the 1970s. They were my gran’s favourite. When we used to visit we would bring a case full of them for her to keep her going,

I have a real craving for Cremola Foam and diluting “fresh” orange juice now having caught up with the thread.

Did you also encounter the Maine mineral man? They were like milkmen but for lemonade and I was always fascinated by the minerals with the crazy fluorescent colours. My Mam went on an anti-E numbers kick in the 80s so we had to avoid them 😭

I also remember loving the cardboard blocks of HB banana ice cream that our Southern relatives used to give us when we visited. It was so much nicer than Dale Farm which seemed to be the only ice cream you could buy in NI in those days.

Ah the disappointment when offered lemonade and being given squash instead!

We had the Maine lemonade man, I think brown lemonade was peculiar to Ireland, I liked the (very lurid green) limeade.

You could get HB ice cream in Northern Ireland in the 70s but my mum would never let us have it - she used to work in a lab at the City Hospital where they tested food for bacteria and she said HB failed every time!

There was something similar where my grandparents lived - they generally used to get your standard corona orangeade, but every now and then used to get raspberryade which sounds weird but was really nice.

I'm also a fan of a lemonade sparkle, although for added decadence (and risk of cavities and diabetes) using one instead of the lolly in a sherbert dibdab gave it an extra kick.

we had the fizzy juice lorry in Fife back in the day. the name escapes me, but you could get red cola, cream soda. We never got it because we were poor, but it used to drive up our street once a week. We called it fizzy juice my da and the glesca lot called it ginger.

Coke and lemonade floats are still on the menu of Jimmy's (Ben Lora cafe in Benderloch, A&B), very popular too.

We had jelly whipped up with evaporated milk also - known as fluffy jelly. I haven't had it, or even thought about it, in decades. I do remember the advent of Angel Delight and Dream Topping being very much welcomed - such an improvement on all the home made rice puddings, bread and butter puddings, suet dumplings, fruit crumbles and anything else that could be eaten with custard we'd had previously (not really in hindsight!)

Dream topping! I can't remember what it was for. Was it a topping? Was it a dessert?

The things that made those so aspiration were the adverts. The swirly delivery and effortless little soft peak in a beautiful glass dish with a stem. A stem!

Bird's dream topping was the top layer of those DIY trifle in a box kits. Then you'd sprinkle multi-coloured hundreds and thousands on top. I really fancy a bowl now.

Yeah it's basically a whipped cream substitute

Dream Topping is still available. Made up with a slightly reduced amount of milk, it's a good way of making synthetic cream for cream buns.

Apparently Sophie Molly smells of pot noodle, according to one renegade member of the polycule.

I still think of this as a mark of sophistication. I love glacé cherries.
