Lots of comments about this news report from Andrew Boulton regarding Anne Widdicombe -he called her a “spinster,” an “old maid” and a “virgin” while speculating about her private life.
I couldn’t believe that as a mainstream broadcaster on Sky he chose language like this to remember her life, regardless of her politics.

Disgraceful scenes on Sky News as a smirking Adam Boulton rants about Ann Widdecombe as a “spinster,” an “old maid” and a “virgin” while speculating about her private life. She was murdered this morning, yet he can’t help but already spew misogynistic...

The free speech police would have you believe incivility aka down right hate speech is a necessary tradeoff for liberty & certainly gender critical supporters are no strangers to subscribing to this new 'cultural more'. So why you would come here of all places to cry about it seems a tad 'out of context'.

Live by the sword…………

Not entirely sure what you're getting at there, the comment is a bit WTF does that mean🤔, but with free speech comes the right to freely tell people to STFU when they express views that are considered repulsive.

Boulton is very much an establishment figure, I doubt Ofcom would be interested, as they are very much about protecting the old guard from new rivals (heavy interest in protecting BBC et al from social media etc).

It seems like his apology is attacking people for criticising him with his "just doing my job" schtick.

Seems like a lot of people are trying to justify her murder by stating her views and lifestyle. People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

All too happy to demand others be cancelled.

I fear you are probably right.
There are probably also quotes from Widdecombe putting it in the public domain.

This was good in response to his pathetic apology: https://x.com/artemisfornow/status/2076051599147888662?s=61&t=HeTVV02FVbA_mwnXH0ymWg

Dear Adam, I have taken time to think about your apology. Mostly because, having made a mistake publicly before, I was keen to accept yours. It hurts when people don’t understand that you are sorry for messing up. I get that, probably more than most....

Boulton has now issued an apology admitting he got the tone and timing wrong.
An understatement to say the least.

Dominoodles · 12/07/2026 11:09

There is no way in hell that he would have spoken about a male politician this way, by commenting on their sex life and marital status before any of their political accomplishments. She deserved more respect than that.

And I didn't even like the woman, not one bit.

Lumpycat · 11/07/2026 13:52

What are the male equivalents of Spinster and old maid?
I suppose bachelor but that doesn’t seem to have the same vibe.

They are mocking women who didn’t have children. It’s usually disguised behind “she should have had them while fertile but she wasted her time doing “feminist” things”. They assume all these women are mired in misery and regret and they’re honing in on that. Quite cruel really.

Never mind that a lot of older childless women might have spent years trying for children but were always infertile.

Theres no male equivalent as these men love reminding us they can father children any time they like.

Another disgusting man

Here's another of the same ilk speaking of Ann Widdecombe, though The National refers to him as 'she':

Herbert's pictures and vitriol have made it onto quite a number of local community FB groups here in England. I was surprised to see him on ours amongst the pothole complaints and planning posts and an update on the local cadets.

The hundreds of responses to him, are very angry and mostly unrepeatable on here. Just ordinary people who aren't AW supporters particularly, but are shocked at her murder.
It's not going how he thought it would.

Sweetbeansandmochi · 11/07/2026 23:35

It makes me think automatically of the Germaine Greer quote “Women have very little idea how much men hate them”.

However some of us do unfortunately know exactly how much men hate us - which is why some of us choose to live alone and only socialise with women. Unfortunately this appears to be a red flag to a certain type of male who decides single and lone women are easy targets.

DeanElderberry · 13/07/2026 08:09

It is an interesting insight into a certain male mindset that sex is a way for men to control women, and that women who decline to be controlled by men must be vilified.

It used to be voiced more often.

Well … Ann Widdcombe was indeed a ‘spinster’ according to the definition of the word. Whether or not that word has negative connotations is up to the reader, From what is known of her life story it seems quite likely that she was also a ‘virgin’; if so it was by choice, and good for her.

Her achievements and character should be the focus after her death - not her sexual history.

And was her supposed virginity relevant to the discussion or was it prurient speculation that would never have been uttered had it been a man with her achievements who had died in those tragic circumstances?

Why was it worth taking up airtime saying that about her? Was there really nothing else worth saying?

Or was it because for some people a woman’s value still depends on who has fk’d her? Or wanted to?

Metalmotha · 14/07/2026 08:11

Some Men just can’t stand strong independent women who don’t spend their lives making themselves into something acceptable to those misogynistic pricks. What’s even more sickening is the women who enable these tossers.

i live near where Anne lived (in fact, we shared the same hairdressers) really great, strong woman. Yes it sounds politically motivated and not at all surprised that the man from the extreme left chose to murder a woman rather than man.

It’s about the thinking which is,

“What an old bitch. A good f* would gave sorted her out.”

As well as fury that she got away.
without this ‘service’ from men.

@Metalmotha we don’t yet know the motivation for her murder, so unless you’re in the counter terror police investigation team it would be premature to declare that he’s far left.

The Metro are promoting this man (simply because he's got the trans label), so much for the Metro's campaign against VAWG, but that campaign always looked virtue signalling because they always defended any man guilty of sex crimes if he claimed a trans identity.

Whilst you are entirely correct that the motivation of the murderer has not been established, the fact that the counter terrorism police are now leading the case would suggest that it wasn't burglary as so many posters initially seemed quite desperate to claim it was.

He's vile.

He is totally out of touch with the mood of the UK public, he thinks he is some sort of freedom fighter or something, but his reality radar obviously malfunctioned some time ago, sad really watching someone making a complete and utter twat of themselves as they perform to their little echo chamber.

This is more likely triggered by her Reform connections and her views in general IMO.

Andrew Pierce did the same thing on R4 on Sunday morning. Spoke about her being a “virgin”, “never had sex”.
The host sounded shocked but just moved on to someone else. Why want it not called out?

Has a murdered man ever been spoken about in this way? I’m so fed up with this shit!
