Waitrose drops ‘feminine’ label from tampons after trans complaint
Waitrose has dropped the word “feminine” from its sanitary products after receiving a complaint that it was not inclusive of transgender people.

Period products will no longer be marketed to females following an internal complaint that said “not all people who have periods are women”.

In the document, the complainant wrote:

A spokesman for Waitrose said the term “feminine products” was changing because the range now included incontinence products for men.

It'll be a trans man (so a woman) complaining, not someone who wants to become a woman.

Feminine hygiene products is awful because the word “feminine”, outside grammar usage, has become loaded with the meaning of “performing female stereotypes”.

Female hygiene products works for me. The use of the term “hygiene” does not seem to me to be pejorative - it’s just about keeping whatever has been spilled sufficiently contained until it can be suitably discarded.

Period products is fine too.

And if we are to include men’s continence products in here, how about a “personal hygiene” aisle divided into men’s and women’s?

A euphemism for continence seems fine - there’s definitely a huge stigma attached to incontinence that’s not going to be broken down overnight because ageism and disablism is so common.

Do I think Waitrose has mused on these matters or made a knee jerk response? Well…

Between their ideology and their prices, I'm surprise anyone still shops in Waitrose.

I think calling them feminine products in the first place was silly sounding. But whilst we’re on the subject, bring back the “WHOOAAHH BODYFORM!!” advert.

Please, can we go with this?
