And the Hanseatic League?
I din't recall them being knocked out.

I was just going to say the same thing, Edith!
The Hansas are definitely still in it, they are obviously the darkest of dark horses in this competition, nobody knows they are there until boom! they win the🏆😄

Sending ❄thoughts to all of you struggling with the heat, it hasn't been that bad where I live, there's always a bit of a breeze to keep it in the mid 20s.

I consider myself so lucky that I'm retired, and don't have to work in this heat, working must be borderline unbearable in the hotter parts of the UK.
They'll have to introduce siestas, where no-one is expected to work, esp outdoors, during the hottest times of the day!

Angle, if you were living over by Donegal, you'd be having 20deg and cloudy today, 27 and sunny tomorrow, and then settling own to a comfy 24 for the rest of the week.
Of course, in Donegal, that's probably considered to be Armageddon!

Myrtle, I think I saw something - was it on another thread? about you having an appt around today-ish - hope that goes well Flowers

Fuzzy, how about Sweep v The Hanseatic League for the final??😁

💕all your kitty-photosSmile

August 12th seems like a very special date to remember Bonnie Tyler RIP - total eclipse..

There are four teams in the last 16 and their matches are being played today. One of them is finishing up as I type. Those were the teams I listed earlier.

Then we will have the quarterfinals in the next two days, the semifinals mid-week, and the final on Saturday or Sunday.

Plus the gerbils will remain interested in the boys World Cup as long as England stay in, then they won’t care at all until someone will mention who won. They will probably be underwhelmed. Unless it is England.

I had an autism assessment yesterday morning. Unsurprisingly I am autistic so my final diagnosis is AuADHD. It left me utterly exhausted which was a surprise, and I had to have a nap yesterday - I don’t generally nap. Then I went to bed around midnight and slept for 8.5 hours. I haven’t slept that long in months. Usually I sleep about 5.5 hours.

Magpiecomplex · 11/07/2026 10:45

Morning all. Slightly cooler here, which is good. Some of my bites have started weeping, which is less good. They are healing though.
Today's exciting occurrence is a haircut.

FuzzyPuffling · 11/07/2026 10:51

Appallingly hot here again. I'm really struggling with chest tightness, breathlessness and palpitations. Even DH, who is normally very good, doesn't really get it.
Another day on the sofa in a darkened room!

Gerbil World Cup HQ: Tunnel vs. Sooty, Sweep & Soo
Abracadabra…

The Tunnel team arrived the way they always did — one at a time, from underground, blinking in the light, having apparently walked the entire distance from their own stadium without once surfacing. Nobody had ever established quite where their tunnels led, and Griselda had long since stopped asking, on the grounds that some questions cost more paperwork than they were worth.

Sooty arrived holding her wand, as ever, and said nothing, as ever. Sweep squeaked a greeting that Gwendoline transcribed, for old times’ sake, as [Sweep, agreeing, though nobody had said anything yet]. Soo walked out last, calm, organised, radiating the quiet authority of someone who had already worked out the final score and simply hadn’t told anyone.

Minute 7: The Tunnel team’s opening spell was pure disorientation — players emerging from three different points around the pitch within the same passage of play, so that Sooty’s back line spent the whole move turning in slow, bewildered circles trying to work out who actually had the ball.

Minute 15: GOAL, Tunnel team. A forward surfaced entirely unmarked six yards out, having apparently travelled the length of the pitch underground, and finished first time before anyone had registered she was there. 1-0. Griselda wrote “not strictly against the rules” in her notes and left it at that.

Minute 23: Sooty produced her wand, waved it once, silently, and — nothing happened, visibly, though the Tunnel team’s next three attacks all broke down in exactly the same spot, which everyone found slightly more suspicious than they were willing to say aloud.

Minute 38: GOAL, Sooty, Sweep & Soo. Soo split the defence with a single, perfectly weighted pass, and Sweep — improbably, given her general size and the general velocity of the ball — got a touch on it that wrong-footed the keeper completely. Sweep’s celebration was one long, delighted squeak. 1-1.

Half-time. Soo held what looked, from the touchline, like the calmest team talk of the tournament — no shouting, no diagrams, just Soo speaking quietly while Sooty stood beside her, wand in paw, and Sweep nodded along to everything.

Minute 61: GOAL, Tunnel team. Another player surfacing from an entirely unexpected part of the pitch, this time right behind Soo’s defensive line, converting from close range before anyone had clocked where she’d come from. 2-1.

Gwendoline’s bulletin read, with real bewilderment: WHERE DO THEY KEEP COMING FROM??

Minute 74: Sooty tried the wand again — a longer wave this time, more deliberate — and the Tunnel team’s next attack collapsed in a heap for reasons nobody could quite explain, the ball simply rolling apologetically out of play. Griselda made a note to “look into the wand” and then, on reflection, decided some things were better left unlooked into.

Minute 85: Soo, sensing time running out, dropped deep to collect the ball herself, drove forward with total composure, and squared it to Sweep, unmarked at the back post. Sweep, facing an open goal, got so overexcited she squeaked instead of shot, and the moment passed.

90+2: One last Tunnel team player emerged, seemingly from beneath the corner flag itself, and simply ran the ball into an empty net while Soo’s entire side was still looking the other way, trying to work out where the noise had come from. 3-1, Tunnel team.

Soo took the defeat with total equanimity, shaking every paw individually, unbothered. Sooty raised her wand one final time as the Tunnel team celebrated — nothing visible happened, though Gwendoline swore, in her bulletin, that the scoreboard flickered for just a fraction of a second longer than it should have.

Greta’s line appeared under the glass before the tunnel entrances had finished closing:

Sooty, Sweep & Soo — out, magic notwithstanding. The Tunnel team — through, from somewhere nobody can quite locate.

I have two separate diagnosed heart irregularities. The cardiologist ( last spoken to 6 years ago) isn't bothered! Normally it's just a nuisance- in this heat, its a bigger nuisance.
But thank you. And @backformoreofthesame too x

FuzzyPuffling · 11/07/2026 11:39

If Sweep is out now I'm going to watch the tennis!

( I bet Discworld win...they sound like a right bunch of cheating ne'er do wells 😀)

MarieDeGournay · 11/07/2026 13:03

Take good care of yourself, FuzzyFlowers
Myrtle - that was the appointment I remembered reading about - it sounds like the diagnosis just confirmed what you already knew about yourself, I hope it's beneficial to have the official diagnosis. It sounds like it took a lot out of you, I hope you have a quiet day today to top off all that sleep that you obviously needed.

I think the Tunnel v Sooty et al. was one of the cleverest game reports - when we first spoke about The Tunnel being a team, I wondered how it would perform on the field of play, being..y'know, a tunnel.

The idea of it travelling under the pitch to pop up just in front of the goal is genious😂

I've never seen Sooty either, nor the Wombles (know them from their hit songs though, and so far the validity of their 'If you minuetto allegretto you will live to be old' has held upSmile), nor the Clangers (but if they are what I think they are, they make a sound that isn't words, but that follows the intonation of speech so they sound like they are conversing, is that right? clever idea).

But that just increases the fun🙂

Ooh, I'm intrigued!

...GO TUNNEL!

Fuzzy, I hope you're somewhere relatively cool, and your palpitations have subsided?

I'm trying to stay near the fan in the coolest part of the house (northeast), but, still, it's going to be 32C again today! Fed up doesn't even begin to describe it. Can't do anything, can barely think straight towards the end of the afternoon. Just lie around and wait for the sun to set. It was 26C at 10pm last night. Beyond. It's just beyond now. 😑

And another week of this...

Is the use of magic considered to be cheating? But often as not they rely on the odds being a million to one against them.

AngleofRepose · 11/07/2026 14:38

Just a suggestion, but if summer is just going to be like this now, wouldn't it be nice to have a saltwater pool or a clear chalk stream for paddling (a magic one, that we wouldn't have to worry about disturbing fragile wildlife) in the next Bluestocking please? The mojito ice bath is great for feet, but angles don't have feet, so a whole pool would be nice!

Seconded! A bit of wild water would be most welcome.

I am very much missing the massive paddling pool we used to have!

Gerbil World Cup HQ: The Appeal
What is fair?

Soo made a complaint about the underground.

It arrived the morning after the Tunnel team’s win, typed, calm, and entirely without exclamation marks, which Gwendoline found almost more alarming than if it had been furious. The complaint stated, plainly, that players surfacing unpredictably from beneath the pitch constituted an unreasonable competitive advantage, and requested a formal review.

Griselda read it twice at her desk, then called Soo in personally, which she rarely did for paperwork of this kind.

“You want the tunnels investigated,” Griselda said.

“I want a level playing field,” said Soo, calm as ever.

Griselda considered this, tapping her pen once against the desk. “And your own captain,” she said, “spent the match waving a wand at the opposition’s attacks. Silently. Repeatedly. To an effect nobody can explain and Sooty has, at no point, confirmed or denied.”

There was a pause. Sooty, present in the room as ever, said nothing, which was itself a kind of answer.

Soo’s composure held, but only just. “That’s different.”

“Is it,” said Griselda, not really as a question.

Soo considered the room, considered Sooty, considered the fact that any ruling against unexplained advantages would have to apply evenly, and withdrew the complaint on the spot, with as much dignity as the situation allowed. Sooty said nothing throughout, which somehow made it worse.

Griselda closed the file. “Withdrawn,” she said, “wisely.”

But she didn’t stop there. She sat with the folder a moment longer, then reopened it and added a second ruling underneath the first, in her own hand, for the record.
“The Tunnel team’s use of the underground during their last match was not against any existing rule,” she wrote, “and the result stands unchanged. However, now that the matter has been formally raised, reviewed, and found to warrant scrutiny, surfacing from beneath the pitch during open play is banned effective immediately, for all future matches. What was permitted once, unchallenged, is not permitted twice, challenged.”

She stamped it, filed it, and sent a short note to the Tunnel team’s captain, informing her that whatever came next, it would have to be won from above ground.
Greta’s line appeared under the glass before the ink had dried:

Appeal — withdrawn. Ruling — stands. The tunnels stay closed from here.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/07/2026 16:25

Cruised down the Yare from just outside Norwich, off the side to Loddon across the cut and up the Waveney to Beccles today.
Lots of soft glaucous green young reedbeds and willows under a mild overcast sky. Birdlife on the river - swans, geese, ducks, cormorants and great crested grebes, one carrying its humbug-striped grebelings on its back. And in the air, red kites, buzzard, kestrel and a marsh harrier.

Chickadeeinme · 11/07/2026 17:29

I think the Bluestocking has anything we want to imagine doesn't it? So out of doors in a spot that gets both shade and sun on the hottest and coldest days of the year, is a stream that widens into a pool big enough for any Angle to rest itself in, with wildlife that won't be disturbed by the wildlife inside the Stocking, and that chuckles off over a pebbly set of rapids into the non-magical distance.

I love Great crested Grebes (even though I did read about some of them in a nature reserve hunting and drowning chaffinches to eat! - this was in Spain, I think)

How does that even happen? Logistically, I mean?

Discworld has the Luggage. Careful deployment of tactics not exactly banned by the rules could see them through to the final and then (it not being, as yet, banned by the rules), the Luggage could consume the opposition's goalie with a happy snappety-snap of her lid.

Or have I just ruined their chances by revealing their strategy?

That sounds blissful, Errol.

We had a day out with friends. Lovely people to hang out with, lots to see, lots to do, weather very good (not too cold when it was cloudy in the morning, not too roasting in the afternoon). I enjoyed every minute.

Except having to sodding well queue up to use the loo. Every-bloody-where you go, the men swan into the gents while the wims are standing there with their legs crossed. 😡
