The cult of the clitoris

Seems appropriate for the end of Pride month (some may notice that perennial link between "education" and "subversion" so beloved of our betters).

A hundred years on from the 'cult of the clitoris' libel trial, let's remember that fake news is nothing new.

Maud Allan created a scandal with her performances of Oscar Wilde's Salome, but it was bizarre accusations of her involvement in a pro-German, sexually perverted conspiracy that drew the interest of the press in 1918, reports Kevin Childs

Disappointing, frankly, OP - I was hoping to find out how to join, and where to get the t-shirt😁

I will start a cult with my clitoris

Fascinating and depressing in equal measures. The utter confidence in those men that they had the right to label, define and judge women.

Thank you for that sensible response to a serious article.
It kinda makes up for mine😄

I can be serious too:
I have always had a good feeling towards Robbie Ross - and Ada Leverson too- for his quiet, practical loyalty to his despised friend OW, and I was sorry to learn that the end of his life was blighted by - and possibly hastened by - this scandal.

The use of accusations of homosexuality as a weapon reminds me of the case of the Irish human rights campaigner and nationalist, Roger Casement.
After he was captured during the 1916 rebellion, the 'Black Diaries' with homosexual content were used to destroy his reputation at his trial.
He was found guilty and hanged as a traitor in Pentonville, unlike the other leaders of the Easter rebellion who were shot after courts-martial in Dublin.

The Black Diaries were long assumed to be forgeries, but it is now widely accepted that they were genuine - ironically, Casement was in fact gay.

I saw this and thought of this thread

My takeaway, we have a club? 😁

I was aware of this thanks to Pat Barker's Regeneration trilogy. I didn't know much about it outside those books. Robbie Ross seemed a principled man, possibly too much so for his health. Pemberton Billing and Alfred Douglas were utter cads towards Wilde, Ross and Maud Allan.
