Fascinating thread, if you're into AI topics. Woman uses AI to generate her cv & notes that it downplays things she regards as vital & uses soft language. She inputs the same info but uses a male name, & the AI generates a different cv, with more forceful language. Why is this? What happens when recruiters use AI to sort applications? She discusses all this with the AI itself!

I just wanted to update my resume. Instead, I accidentally proved how a multi-billion-dollar AI tool hallucinates a glass ceiling for women. I changed a single variable: My name. Here is what happened when "Jennifer" became "Jeff."

AI is trained on what exists in the electronic world. It is therefore sexist, racist and like a scummy bro in his mum's basement. But trained to appear agreeable.

Garbage in, garbage out.

I's trained on a dataset of and lots of other peoples CVs. If it's leaning towards downplaying things and using softer language, that suggests that the CVs of women it has in its training dataset from women downplay their own achievements and use softer language.

Yes, it's sexism, the patriarchy and all that crap. But the AI is only doing it because that's what women have been socialised into doing to themselves.

Have women been socialized into doing this or is it just what we do - use more descriptive language and fewer bullet points?

I learnt to write a CV from working as an HR manager and having to read hundreds of the things.

I threw out anything that didn't get my attention immediately and answer most of my questions on page one and all my remaining questions on page two. Page 3 and the rest if there were more never got looked at.

OK, more accurate to say women and men have both been socialised into doing it differently.

But pretty much every element of our behaviour is down to our socialisation. There's no direct biological reason why men should be more forthright than women. There is an indirect one though. Men are bigger and stronger, and so have had power over women since we were cavemen. Filter that down through hundreds of thousands of years of socialisation and you get women who are less likely to take credit for their achievements than men are.

What is so strange is that anyone is still using CVs!

Years ago it was generally agreed that they just allowed the usually prejudices of sex, race and class to continue unchecked.

And that an application form with a set of questions is assessed by someone who cant see the name, age or sex of person applying.

So a process that has been known to be discrminatory is obviously going to go on being that.

Why is anyone surprised!

What is so strange is that anyone is still using CVs!

Especially with people who reject 80% unseen 😀
