Back in the patisserie.

The guinea pigs will be delighted to be patissiers in residence. Ganache uses a lot of edible flowers on her cakes, as any professional pastry chef should do.
I heard whisperings in the pantry that sounded like a discussion about whether World Cup Celebration cakes should be football shaped.

That was a lovely day - Flying boat museum, which I have wanted to see for years, lots of stuff about experimental early aviation and the attempt to make transatlantic crossing feasible (working against clock if they'd only known, between 1937 And 1939), much memorabilia and a full size replica Yankee Clipper to walk around inside. Loads of bonus Maureen O'Hara stuff including her Oscar (her husband was the last pilot to fly a flying boat out of the local airport in 1945, she was a founding patron of the museum). Tea and scones (and for me gluten-free carrot cake, much appreciated) and much Irish coffee propaganda that most people resisted.

Then back to the towns at the bottom of our lake and a boat trip, always fun to see your own familiar landscape from a different angle. The boat had a bar and there was more Irish coffee propaganda, a few people succumbed but I had tea. Then late lunch/early dinner of delicious salmon followed by ice cream. Everyone happy except one of the two men fratcheting a bit, leading to the organiser wandering to our end of the dining table and exclaiming in heartfelt tones 'lads, I'm so fucking glad I'm a widow!'

And home 10 hours after I set out.

Perfect.

My ahem hip remains slightly annoyed, and I think I'll take an antihistamine.

PastaAllaNorma · 16/06/2026 19:07

Cotillion or Venetia are good entry novels for Heyer. The Grand Sophy is splendid but has a very uncomfortable antisemitic scene.

EmpressaurusKitty · 16/06/2026 19:25

Or Frederica has some very funny bits.

They do all tend to have happy endings though.

Afternoon all. Bar gerbil, is the chocolate milkshake bowser (double-walled for thermal insulation) available? I'll have that please. If not, I'll have an iced chocolate, extra large, extra ice, extra fast.

I'm a tad warm.

Oooh - can I request an iced coffee bowser, please-and-thank you!

Chickadeeinme · 16/06/2026 19:29

Congratulations to @PastaAllaNorma and her DH!

I love a good audiobook and somehow have never acquired a Georgette Heyer title. Currently listening to “Yesteryear”, which has a very dislikable heroine who somehow you can’t stop following to find out what happens. Excellent so far and is beguiling me as I wait for my flight.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 16/06/2026 19:31

Definitely drinks all round - congratulations @PastaAllaNorma!

Chersfrozenface · 16/06/2026 19:39

Evening all.

I've been avoiding the World Cup, partly by spending 48 hours in a field with unreliable mobile data. A bit extreme, I know, but there were compensations.

Could I possibly order a Hanseatic League replica shirt, please?

I’d like a decaf version for afternoons and evenings please.

EmpressaurusKitty · 16/06/2026 19:48

It’s a lot easier to avoid the World Cup when you live with a cat & don’t have a tv. Although I’m loving the gerbil version.

MarieDeGournay · 16/06/2026 21:03

Well, ehhhh .. Gary, it's been a game of two halves and the full time score is about fair, Gary - Pasta's mortgage 1- Deano's right buttock 0.😁

I'm glad you had another nice day, Deano, after the nature walk one with the kids yesterday.

I've never been to the flying boat museum, it sounds great. I suppose they have to push Irish Coffee there because that's where it was invented - to warm up the passengers coming off the chilly flying boats - as I'm sure you already knew, SmileDeano.
I didn't know about the Maureen O'Hara connection, very interesting.

Have a lovely time in NJ with the family, Chickadeeinme.

I'm sorry work is overwhelming at the moment, Kitty and the relaxing evening with Kitty, Georgette and The Blanket is going well.

I hope I haven't left anything/anybody out, I've just done a quick catch-up.
Oh I nearly forgot -
nice to see another Hanseatic League fan, Cher! Come on you Hansas!

I am sure that, in the Bluestocking, decaf coffee tastes just as good as the fully caffeinated version, @ErrolTheDragon.

EmpressaurusKitty · 16/06/2026 21:28

Thanks @MarieDeGournay. Just started on the cats’ ears.

The Flying Boat Museum sounds fabulous.

Just popping in to say hello. I've been a bit out of touch and not kept up with everything - I always feel like I'm running just to stand still at this time of the year but I look forward to the summer holidays and more time to keep an eye on what the gerbils are up to.

The third match of the Gerbil World Cup attracted the largest crowd yet. Word had spread. Nobody was entirely sure what had spread. Some claimed it was news of the football. Others believed it was news of the chaos. Either way, the stadium was full long before kick-off. Flags fluttered from every railing. Supporters packed the stands. Gubbins had somehow acquired a larger triangle.

The teams emerged to a tremendous roar. The elephant shrew referees marched onto the pitch with expressions suggesting that they had prepared thoroughly for every possible eventuality. This confidence lasted approximately four minutes.

The weather had been pleasant all morning. Bright sunshine illuminated the stadium. Not a cloud was visible anywhere overhead.

As the players lined up for kick-off, Geography happened to glance towards the horizon. She frowned. There was a cloud. It was not an especially large cloud. Nor was it moving particularly quickly. It simply sat there in the distance looking suspicious. Geography continued watching it.

The cloud appeared to be growing. A few moments later there were two clouds. Then four. Then what seemed to be an entire committee of clouds.

The crowd paid no attention. The whistle blew. The match began. For nearly ten glorious minutes, football happened. Not good football. Not even competent football. But recognisably football. There were passes. There were tackles.

Grenadine successfully dribbled around three opponents before becoming distracted by cheering and accidentally joining the crowd. The spectators loved it.

Then a raindrop landed on Gadget’s nose. She looked upwards. Another landed. Then another. Around the stadium, heads tilted towards the sky. The players slowed. The crowd murmured. The elephant shrews exchanged glances.

Rain was not particularly unusual. The amount of rain arriving, however, was becoming noteworthy. Within moments the shower had intensified into a downpour. Flags drooped. Programmes dissolved. The crowd squealed. The pitch darkened. Water splashed beneath every running paw.

Still the match continued. At first the conditions merely made football more difficult. Then they made football irrelevant. Gladioli attempted to stop suddenly and travelled another six metres. Gazpacho launched herself heroically towards the ball and accidentally reached the halfway line.

Several players discovered that sliding through puddles was vastly more entertaining than scoring goals. The crowd rose to its feet. Nobody was watching the football anymore. The football had become secondary. The real spectacle was the mud.

The pitch was transforming before their eyes. Patches of grass disappeared beneath shining pools of water. Channels formed. Puddles merged. Entire sections of the field developed distinct personalities. One corner became known as Lake South-West. Nobody remembered naming it. The name simply appeared.

The ball rolled into the lake and stopped. Twenty-two players charged after it. What happened next could no longer reasonably be described as football. Gallantine reached the puddle and slid straight through it. Grapejuice followed. Then Guppy.

Within seconds the entire match had become a mass participation mud-slide. Players hurled themselves across the pitch. Supporters abandoned the stands. Even the elephant shrew referees found themselves skidding uncontrollably through several feet of water.

The stadium erupted with delight. The rain continued falling. The mud became deeper. The slides became longer. Soon elaborate techniques were being developed.

Granite achieved remarkable distance by launching from a small mound. Glyph attempted to diagram the optimal trajectory while moving. Gubbins slid past carrying her triangle above her head like an Olympic torch. Nobody had the faintest idea where the football was. Nobody cared.

The World Cup had discovered a new sport. And it was magnificent.

The image is waiting for approval, but can be seen on my Substack.

@PastaAllaNorma big congrats on the mortgage pay-off. It is lovely feeling when the bloody thing has gone.

And Deano, getting across the Atlantic by air... I could bore for Britain about the Atlantic Air Gap and how critical closing it was to the resupply of the UK during WWII. There is a brilliant book called Engineers of Victory which includes a chapter on it (and one on capturing a hostile shore, and so on). Surprisingly readable - well-researched without being yawn-inducingly academic.

RumNotRun · 16/06/2026 22:25

Congratulations @PastaAllaNorma - that must be a great feeling. May I offer you some of my homemade mocha ice cream to celebrate? It's flipping lovely, even if I do say so myself.

I have also made bread today (well, I measured the ingredients, my new breadmaker did the rest) with gluten added. I did not know until I got this machine that gluten was something you could buy, as opposed to a thing that was found in wheat. I don't know why the recipe calls for added gluten as it uses standard bread flour, but I'll see if it makes a difference when I try it tomorrow. I will of course be sharing with anyone who wants to try it, I'm sure the power of the Bluestocking means that one loaf will feed us all (apologies if that's blasphemy or something!)

Makes it chewier and makes the dough easier to handle.

Please may I have a Large Gold Watch? I don't need it. I have done nothing to earn it. I just fancy it.

Hedgehogforshort · 16/06/2026 22:48

Hello been busy elsewhere, and then had to tramp around to find the pub. Emailed [email protected]. Ordered a gin and a snowball, (rumour had it that boiled Has lost control of the stash)

wading through the Lorna Young case, what a shit show, only half way through the thread, with a lot of FFS comments in my head.

Nice to see you are active there Marie.

<sups pint of gin>

As an aside i hated football before all them multi coloured laces. You can totally rely on a male orientated sport being homophphobic but at the same time supporting men in dresses.

Just popped in any way, said my bit, off to bed

I haven’t been around for a while but I thought I’d stick my head round the door to say that the lovely Ben Cooper KC has been awarded Barrister of the Year at the Lawyer Awards this evening, partly for his work with Sex Matters, and his chambers (Old Square Chambers) is Chambers of the year. I thought that was worth celebrating!

My scarf for the tournament. Still pristine as I managed to miss the Match du Déluge.
