New thread.

No pushing at the back, please, we have plenty of scones and kilts for everyone.

I wear a gilet on mild days because it's got useful (and necessary pockets) but I won't overheat as it's sleeveless and usually unzipped. I should confess that I would rather walk in the rain than in sunshine and don't mind getting drenched.

You're right, Marie, I am repeating myself! They were a present for my 40th birthday from my best friend, and a huge surprise. But a very lovely one.

I didn't mean that you were repeating yourself in a bad wayFlowers
You can never say loving things about little furry animals too often here at the Bluey - it's reassuring for the gerbils, who are sensitive little souls....Smile

Have to admit that @FuzzyPuffling has a better justification!

WRT scones. My maternal DGM baked scones. They were barely edible, being hard lumps of overcooked dough. They splintered as you cut into them and could only be eaten by adding their own weight in whipped cream and strawberry jam. TBF, my Gran was a shit cook but a brilliant Gran.

I make excellent cheese scones - the secret is to put in far, far too much cheese, and then a bit more cheese. They lose all structural integrity, due to all the cheese, and are more splats than scones, but they taste amazing.

Thehorticulturalhussie · 15/06/2026 12:27

I love that the BS is so wide ranging and wise. So far today we have shimmied seamlessly from gardening guinea pigs to gilets and have segued elegantly into cheese scones via sticking your arm into cows. Without sounding bonkers.

Chickadeeinme · 15/06/2026 12:51

I am not a gilet lover. If I’m chilly I tend to feel it on my arms more than my torso, so if my torso feels as if it needs covering then the arms definitely need covering too. Quite often on a chilly day I’ll wear a jacket but not necessarily bother doing the buttons or zip up.

EmpressaurusKitty · 15/06/2026 13:23

I’ve got a jacket with zips round the sleeves so it can theoretically be a gilet.

An occasional gilet, like an occasional table...😄

The great thing about gilets is the pockets. Maybe waterproof ones keep the things in the pockets dry.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/06/2026 16:11

I’ve never owned a gilet. Perhaps I should try one as a solution to how to have adequate pocket capacity on a day too warm for a coat. And also avoids the other problem of most jackets and fleeces having arms which extend down over my hands.

Exactly! Sleeveless pockets.

This is also something that we’ve been told, but bears much repetition!Grin

I rather like the periodic reiterations, they’re a bit like threads running through the fabric of the Bluestockings.

If they don't, I'll have theirs.

I expect so. I don't think they're particularly fussy. I am basing this purely on Yogi bear cartoons. I don't recall him ever going through a picnic basket and rejecting any of the sandwiches cause he didn't like the filling.

Based on the car I saw in Yosemite , ripped apart by a bear to get at the picnic hamper, I feel confirmation bears like pretty much everything they can put in their mouths.

That car was torn up like it was tinfoil.

Don’t tell the capybaras.

Swashbuckled · 15/06/2026 17:53

I do feel better educated about gilets now, thank you ☺️

I can certainly see the benefits of many summer pockets and being able to push one’s arm up a cow.

Food for thought.

The great thing about gilets is the pockets. Maybe waterproof ones keep the things in the pockets dry.

Waterproof gilets also mystify me, but waterproof pockets and being able to stick your arm up a cow (and maybe other tasks requiring freedom of movement for the arms) do make a certain amount of sense.

Swashbuckled · 15/06/2026 18:10

Yes, those bits make sense but I’m still puzzling a little.

In a heatwave, would a gilet lover still wear one for the pockets alone (and for any passing cows in distress, of course) or would they wear a bag with many pockets…?

JanesLittleGirl · 15/06/2026 18:10

A waterproof gilet is perfect for sailing on a warm day.

You shove it all into whatever pockets you have.
