I just want to go in and sort my transaction out, why does the branch have to be festooned with the trans flag? Signs up saying they're inclusive, absolute woke posturing.

No political statements should be made in a financial institution.

I have a lot of money saved with them but I'm thinking of withdrawing it now.

Can't go anywhere in June without being bludgeoned into insensibility with all the deary and tiresome grandstanding.

PollyNomial · 08/06/2026 14:09

Building societies are themselves famously expressions of politics that distinguish themselves from banks...

It is very performative zero-cost posturing for any organisation who you'd never expect to treat male and female differently in any case to go all out about how trans-inclusive they are. The only businesses who need to have a policy are those providing services and opportunities which are sensibly provided differently for males and females, and of course those businesses need to think carefully about how best to welcome customers/service users who don't want to be included with their birth-sex, and such businesses should rightly use various opportunities to publicise that trans people are welcome and will be treated with dignity and respect. A bank, supermarket or library really doesn't need to do the same because welcoming everyone is their default and there are no men's or women's sections that might create a need for additional efforts to ensure trans people feel welcome. I doubt that banks, supermarkets and libraries go to similar efforts to shout about how very very non-racist they are, or use flags and posters about how brilliant they are about being non-discriminatory on any of the other protected characteristics.

Really good post RareGoalsVerge.

Every time I go in the NBS branch I use I'm the youngest customer in there and I'm in my 60's so I'm not even sure who the woke posturing is aimed at.

Trans activists have infiltrated everywhere you dare look. They have persuaded the Pensioners Convention to campaign in support of the Conversion Practices Bill and exhort members to write to their MPs.

Do you have a link to somewhere I can read up on this, please? Not doubting you, just would like to have it for another thread/discussion. Thanks

It's better than Hello Fresh who cheerily want us to think about gay men emptying their bowels before anal sex, while planning our evening meals for the week.

I bookmarked the first page linked below in 2021 when I was having a trawl through various voluntary organisations, to see if they had said anything about the proposed ban on Conversion Therapy.

However, I don't see the "call to action" to write to MPs that I mentioned, so I think that must have been on another site where it was the first announcement by a newly formed LGBT Group. Not the National Pensioners Convention.

All the links below are on the NPC site and relate to the Conversion Therapy Ban:

Banning Conversion Therapy - NPC evidence for the consultation
Note: their main concern at this stage seems to be that the ban should be extended to cover religious and faith groups:

"The National Pensioners Convention welcomes the Government Consultation but remains concerned that their present proposals on Conversion Therapy, while welcome, do not go far enough. In order to protect all LGBT+ people living in England and Wales from the use of Conversion Therapy practices, and respecting their right to determine their own sexuality, and sexual and gender identity without fear of abuse, exclusion or isolation; the ban on Conversion Therapy must extend to the use of such practices by religious and faith groups."

CALLS TO BAN CONVERSION THERAPY

The King’s Speech did not include legislation to ban the abhorrent practice of conversion therapy. This ‘therapy’ seeks to change or supress someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity.

Baroness Burt has tabled a Private Members Bill which proposes a UK-wide ban on the practice. This will be debated next year.

Baroness Burt - a Liberal Democrat peer says that there is a cross party consensus in favour of the ban.

However, the Bill has a long road ahead with several rounds of voting in the House of Lords and if it has enough support, it would then pass to the House of Commons for MPs to debate.

Many of the issues around banning the practice hinge on potential unintended consequences for parents, teachers, therapists and religious freedoms.
Baroness Faulkner, Chair of the Equalities Commission, says legislation is needed to ban this harmful practice, with thorough and detailed scrutiny to avoid any unintended consequences.

A government spokesperson said: ‘No one in this country should be harmed or harassed for who they are, and attempts at so-called conversion therapy are abhorrent. That is why we are carefully considering this very complex issue.’
The NPC supports the banning of conversion therapy, but we would like to hear from you what you think. So please email us at the closed emailed address or write to us (anonymously if need be) at the office address below.

++++

There is also a dedicated, confidential email address for NPC members to contact the LGBT Working Group, "This is overseen by the Chair and NPC lead for the group and carries a password to ensure that access is limited to those people. The security of your message is important to us."

It looks very much as if the NPC has become aware that the issue is not quite as straightforward as when it conveyed the views of the LGBT Group in its Consultation Response in 2021 and when it published a response to the Queen's Speech in 2022.

Let me see if I've got this right- you are unhappy with a building society and want to withdraw all your money because you saw a pride flag?

A few years ago Royal Mail released a set of pride themed postage stamps (the flag with the added chevrons is on one) so do you also refrain from sending and receiving mail through the Royal Mail?

I would be thinking of moving my money if the branch was festooned with Palestinian flags or Labour party flags etc. Pride is political and I shouldn't have politics shoved in my face when I'm in a financial institution.

No, you’ve got it wrong. Until you brought up the Pride flag, OP hadn’t mentioned it. OP talks about trans flags.

Whether you agree with her views or not, it’s legitimate to judge a company on the values they publicly align themselves with.

I imagine OP may see the trans movement as inextricably linked to a long-running, largely successful and often unlawful movement to destroy effective sex-based rights in the public realm in the UK in favour of identity-based ones. Or maybe it’s the medicalisation and sterilisation of young gay and autistic people she’s not keen on.

Assuming you are a fan of gay rights (as am I), would you want to invest with a company that actively advertised that it sided with the destruction of such rights and damage to gay young people?

Obviously you might see the issue differently, but that’s not your point. Your point is that OP is silly for thinking these things matter.

MyCandidDreamer · 09/06/2026 09:12

Thank you GenderRealistBloke
You summed it up better than me.

I also feel the trans flag is slightly threatening with the black/brown colours, it's not a happy rainbow!
