First "woman" to serve on the frontline in the British Army

This is an old one from 2016. It goes like this:

• army lifts ban on women serving on the frontline in the British Army
• man called Ben announces he is a woman
• "Congratulations, Ben, er, I mean Chloe, you're the first woman to serve on the frontline of the British Army" 🎉

I think this is a good illustration of how far we have come. No way would we stand for this kind of gaslighting now.

Indeed. Remember it well.

I just showed it to my DH, and he said "that has to be a parody". I replied, "unfortunately not". Crazy times.

Then he had an affair with a colleagues wife so showing his true manly credentials 🤷‍♀️

And it's a load of bollocks anyway. Back in 1991, at the height of the troubles in Northern Ireland, two women (WRAC) were posted to Bessbrook Mil, a few miles from Newry which was the heart of the 'bandit country' at that time. They were posted to an infantry regiment and were considered to be the 'first women on the front line'. An honour that caused them significant embarrassment when they just wanted to get on with their jobs (and was a kick in the teeth to the UDR greenfinches (female serving soldiers) that had been there all along and were the ACTUAL first women on the front line).

Ah - the esteemed BBC reporting to "inform, educate and entertain". 🙄

First WRAC permanently assigned to Royal Engineers as troop commander was back in 1981.

If you presented that as a comedy sketch amongst a half hour episode of others nobody would question its being there.
