House Of Communions, Early Day Motion tabled - Draft Code of Practice on Services, public functions and associations

This is not a prayer motion, the only thing that could reject the draft guidance.

See here for more info https://www.parliament.uk/about/how/business/edms/

I do not think there is much chance of a prayer motion being voted on, given the timetables, who controls the timetable etc etc. But the chances are not zero.

I've just checked the list to find my MP is on it, sigh. I had better write to him, but ugh I struggle to be eloquent with this kind of thing. If anyone has a template letter I could use as a starting point I'd appreciate it.

I'm so furious with the left wing parties for making me politically homeless. I will not vote Conservative or Reform due to many issues, and then LD and Green have made themselves impossible to vote for because they don't give a damn about women's rights, safety, or dignity. Labour is undecided on all fronts as far as I can tell.

ItsCoolForCats · 03/06/2026 16:19

4 Plaid MPs have signed now. As well as Ellie Chowns from the Greens.

FlirtsWithRhinos · 03/06/2026 16:24

David Lammy of "trans women can grow a cervix, women are rights hoarding dinosaurs" fame hasn't signed yet I see...

No government minister will sign if they want to remain a government minister.

I'm sure somebody will come up with a template, but I think there's value in a short, clear, unequivocal statement that you disagree with his action in signing this, because

  1. transpeople can use the toilets designated for their sexes, they choose not to.
  2. women have rights too, and our right to single-sex spaces based on biological sex has been reaffirmed by the highest court in the UK.
  3. Why are are you taking up so much time and effort to allow men to use the women's toilet? Whatever happened to 'The good men stay out so the bad men stand out?'

Hang on... that's a template, isn't it?😄
What I mean is that if the MP is getting lots of template-based letters/emails, a punchy one that tells it like it is may stand out.

Magnificent work @MarieDeGournay thank you!

I think so. But given his history, worth calling out.

David Lammy is Deputy Prime Minister. Government ministers, Whips, Parliamentary Private Secretaries, and the Speaker and Deputy Speakers of the House of Commons do not sign Early Day Motions. Because EDMs relate to collective responsibility and political impartiality, these officials are generally excluded from tabling or signing them.

Ah got it. Disappointing actually, I thought it was indicating the ambitious/senior politicians had decided not to back a losing horse this time rather than he literally wasn't allowed to sign.

Definitely. I might also add that the safety of my 10 year old daughter weighs on my mind - she looks younger than she is, and is a competitive swimmer. When she's getting changed for swimming she's very vulnerable. I'm grateful that her club pool has single sex changing, and that there are no public sessions on at the same time as club training, but not all pools are as fortunate.

lcakethereforeIam · 03/06/2026 17:45

My MP (LD) has signed. Bastard!

This is what worries me about this Labour lot. It seems like they don’t care how shit they make things for many of us because they are prepared to use all the dirty tricks in the book to retain power. They are planning all sorts like letting 16 yr olds vote, letting more recent immigrants vote - etc.

MarieDeGournay · 03/06/2026 18:20

A sneaky trick I have when contacting politicians is to use the burbly stuff they usually put in their replies - inclusivity - standing with - trans rights are human rights etc.
Something like
'I'm sure you agree with me that transgender people are entitled to the same human rights as everyone else, and it is important that we remain an open and inclusive society...'
[if writing to one of Ed Davey's crew, you could even make a reference to 'traditional British values of fairness,' if you likeGrin]
That inclusivity and fairness must of course apply to all sections of society, and that includes women.
Unfortunately, women appear to have been ignored in writing this EDM/Fatal Prayer......'

so head them off at the pass with their own chlichés!

Total derail but the thought that an Early Day Prayer Motion is necessary in the House of Communions is making me laugh.

It sounds like someone with constipation in the morning.

I reckon the secret GC one is Dianne Abbott. I was surprised to see her signature on there as Rosie Duffield has said before that DA gets it. Haven't the Greens done well in Hackney? That might be why she's done it, if it's her, but I thought she had more integrity than that.

If even secretly GC MPs are signing this, it shows it is performative and unlikely to have much impact (I say in hope).

Ellie Chowns is definitely gender critical, and has openly shared that including in her bid
to be GP leader last year. She probably will only have signed this due to the threat of being chucked out of her own party (which has happened to many many GC women who have been GP members for many years).

Ilikeanicecupofteainthemorning · 03/06/2026 19:35

I would LOVE to know why Tim Farron and the other LD withdrew their support

ItsCoolForCats · 03/06/2026 20:06

Stella Creasy is still going over on X but ignoring the many questions asking her to state a) what she thinks is wrong with the code of practice or b) what is wrong with the law.

Her position is contemptible. She wants the law to be changed to prioritise GI over sex, but she won't even come out and say it. She is spouting some nonsense about the creep of statutory instruments and how they are being used to circumvent parliamentary debate. Even though it's been pointed out to her that the code of practice is not a statutory instrument. Just come out and bloody say that the EA should be changed to prioritise men with special identities! Coward.

Is she? I have definitely seen her post some TRA nonsense recently. I know Adrian Ramsey has tried to be balanced (much to the ire of TRAs).

Ellie Chowns only signed today, so the 2 GC signatories that Rosie Duffield referred to yesterday must be someone else.

He has to his credit, and that’s what cost him the GP leadership election last year and landed us with the Boob Whisperer!
