New thread. You know the deal - women's pub, men to the Staunch Ally next door.

Some of us are currently on the trail of an international seed smuggling ring, just for background information.

Bar gerbils would you kindly make me a Furious Photon, easy on the ice but can I have sparklers in it? Thank you you wonderful creatures.

Pasta, your party sounds very organized already! I did the "only mow paths" thing one year, and it looked great, but my hay fever was the worst it had ever been, so now I only keep a small patch of long grass.

I've got the main beats of hosting a communal lunch pretty much nailed. The guys will erect two more gazebos (for shade/protection from rain) while I bake the scones on Sunday morning. I've got seats and benches for 16 people and am borrowing 10 more if needed.Loada of freezer packs in the chest freezer so we can do a chiller trug to keep drinks cold.

I leave the bottom quart of the garden wild with a path through it to the fruit trees. Unfortunately, we didn't think about that when relocating the compost bins down there to allow for the bigger poly tunnel. This year's garden compost is FULL of grass and weed seeds. It's a nightmare.

Penultimate teaching week of the year done, and I'd like something large and frivolous please, bar gerbil. Surprise me.

I must say, the gerbils have outdone themselves!

Can I just say, meant kindly and helpfully, that what I hear from your words is that there are more negative feelings than positive ones plus some anxiety about the future? And definitely no Wow. Feel free to tell me I'm wrong but it doesn't sound like it's your house.

I think you're right, it's not wow or joy I'm feeling, but I've been looking off and on for a few years, because I know I am going to have to move house at some point. It's also taken me a while to settle on location. I can't stay in this little village forever, and the older I get, the harder it will be to move. My current home is lovely, but it's too big for me, and the maintenance is becoming too much for me.

And because I love my home, it's harder. I would love to find something I fall in love with, but it's more about, does it have everything I will need when I'm old, living on my own. My village is just too small, and someday I may not be able to drive. I don't want to be moving house only because it's imperative, immediately, due to health reasons or age.

So, yes, not a lot of joy in the search yet.

FuzzyPuffling · 12/06/2026 19:32

I agree with hussie. That house sounds like a list of compromises and hassle.
Keep looking...I feel quite certain there's something far better round the corner..

I did laundry today as it was the weather for it; pegged out and it dried beautifully. Will do another load tomorrow. (Message me for the film rights.)

Went for a walk on the beach early evening as the tide was partly out. Walked to the cliffs and sat on a low cliff shelf with a cider I’d found in my fridge. It was very beautiful. Sunny but very windy. Disturbed by a passing man at one point but the hound saw him off. He was only a fossil hunter and went to hammer further down. Might make it my Friday routine, weather and tide permitting.

Magpiecomplex · 12/06/2026 19:49

Your laundry sounds more exciting than mine, Swashy!

Thank you, Magpie.

@AngleofRepose I will be in the same position in a very few years so I sympathise. In our very small village we have no buses, GP or shop so it's no place to live when you don't drive. At some point I won't be able to do the very steep but beautiful garden and Mr Hussy won't be able to deal with the stairs. I have kind of decided that rather than find a smaller house which we would forever compare to this one I will choose a flat, garden or penthouse, in a town.

EmpressaurusKitty · 12/06/2026 20:14

My dad’s at the stage where the house is a bit big for him, and the shops aren’t within his walking distance, & I think it’s starting to hit him that he might have to move at some point too.

Good luck, @AngleofRepose.

EdithStourton · 12/06/2026 22:34

Angle, people do stay in villages who can't drive any longer. They rely on their neighbours and deliveries and taxis and any offspring they have in range and possibly the man who does the garden if you can afford him. I can understand if you don't wan to do that - but is moving to a city essential if it's so expensive that you have to compromise massively on the house?

Our medium-term plan is to move into a local market town with access to pub, shops, GP, various friends, takeaway, clubs and societies, and places to walk whatever dogs we have at the time.

Earlier on this evening I was chatting to a chap in his 70s who lives in a bungalow down a lane. He clearly intends on staying there into his decrepitude ('Of course, there's a already a wet room because [his late wife] needed one, it's well set up for someone infirm...'). He was born a field or two away in a house he can see from his driveway and he in't going nowhere until he has to go into a home - and he'll avoid that at all costs.

I shall be out all day tomorrow so will probably miss the move which is a mere four pages away. I hope to find a Sky of Doom on the bar awaiting me when I get home.

Chickadeeinme · 12/06/2026 22:54

I hear you @AngleofRepose . We moved from a house in the country on a 1 ½ acre lot because the garden was too much and you had to get into a car to go anywhere as the nearest shop was 2 ½ miles away. We really like our neighbourhood here though, and DH planned the renovations with future infirmity in mind, so we hope never to have to move at least while there are two of us. I can't speak for him, but I probably would move somewhere smaller if it was just me. One of my rental properties is a small 2 bed bungalow that would probably work, or I could buy somewhere else. If I sell this house after his death I'd have to give half the value to his daughter, who would inherit from him, though.

A Furious Photon has to have sparklers, by definition.

Not everyone knows that but you’re absolutely right, the bar gerbils have never got one wrong yet and didn’t need to be told.

We moved to a city ( still coastal) after 7 years in very rural Cornwall.
I'm still delighted by the proximity of everything- shops, GP surgery, library, pharmacy, railway station are all within walking distance.
The hospital is now 15 minutes up the road, whereas it was 1.5 hrs drive away. And that matters.
And buses...every 20 minutes as opposed to four per week.

Of course my heart misses the views and air of the country, by my head knows this is sensible.

Was...was Father Ted actually a documentary?

I think it was actually raisins.

Swashbuckled · 13/06/2026 08:34

I used to live in a small rural village, Angle, and have moved to a small coastal town.

Like Fuzzy, I’m amazed that all amenities are a few steps away, including the sea: GP, bakers, butchers, post office, train station etc etc etc. (No dentist accepting patients though, sadly.)

However, before everything changed, I had planned to stay in the rural village. My plan for reduced mobility was: Tesco online delivery; Amazon; local handyman for the garden; taxis to the GP, Dentist, hospital, train station. I thought this would work out fine. I loved the house and the stairs would accommodate a stair lift.

RumNotRun · 13/06/2026 09:15

I have Plans for today, instead of my usual weekends which are spent being a cat (sleeping, eating, and napping. Maybe with added snoozing). I am going fossil hunting at a local stony beach. I've invited a couple of friends too. One has said he expects fossil hunting to take no more than 10 minutes then we can go for drinks. The other friend I think will have a bit more staging power! I have said they're welcome to sit on a bench and have a drink while I pootle around with my fossil identification app trying to find the best ones I can. Apparently in 2014 a dinosaur skeleton was found on this beach, so that's my ultimate aim 😁 I did an archaeology degree and love ancient history so the nerd in me is excited to be let loose!

RumNotRun · 13/06/2026 09:18

Going back to cocktail names, we have a bar in Cardiff called N64 (apparently it's a chain) where all the cocktails are named after computer games. They also have many retro arcade machines there. My friends and I are significantly older than most if the clientele but we remember the original games whereas the young whippersnappers are just discovering the joys.

AngleofRepose · 13/06/2026 09:28

Morning, everyone! Thanks for all your words of wisdom and encouragement 💜I am trying to come at this from a point of view of moving towards, rather than moving away from, so I am hopeful that I will find something. I think my compromise will be that I will need to do some work to the property, and that's ok as long as it isn't too much work! It's my house I'm attached to, not necessarily the village. Time to think creatively, maybe.

Run, sounds like a great day out! I, on the other hand, will get no closer to excitement than laundry, cleaning, and tidying the garden this weekend. Supposed to have three days of sunshine in a row, so better get moving!

This is it, exactly! I want all those things, and I will need a lot of them as well. Just like you and Swash. I lived in the city for many years before I met my late husband, so I know it won't take me long to settle in.
