New thread. You know the deal - women's pub, men to the Staunch Ally next door.

Some of us are currently on the trail of an international seed smuggling ring, just for background information.

Oh wow - why oh why oh why did I leave England? I'd have cancelled all plans to retire home if I'd known about DIGGERLAND😕
It looks brill. In a parallel universe, I am organising a Bluestocking Day Out😁

Oh look, the Gerbils have got there ahead of us!
Well I see Woley [loving the coat, very summery, Woley!] and Fuzzy and Hedgey with one of the hoglets have turned up early, and is that Inky?
And there's Mr Walrus, he popped along to tell us that Myrtle would be along shortly..
Thank heavens it's Capability Capybara in charge of the crane!

PS[, yes in fact I DO have better things to do with my timeGrin]

Heyer books are quite formulaic & she does recycle her plots, so the books can blur into each other. But she’s brilliant with language & creates very vivid characters.

The Black Sheep and A Woman Of Quality are virtually identical but I like them both anyway. Although I like Miles far more than Oliver Carleton.

I'd strangle Miss Fishguard - I cannot be doing with excessive sensitivity, especially not when combined with too much romantic poetry magree with Freddy that Lochinvar sounds like a dashed loose screw.

I loved Sophy in my first Heyer, Frederica in the second and others later on, but the Heyer heroine I'd most likely be friends with is Venetia. I like the pragmatic well read heroines who also rescue themselves and know how to garden.

EmpressaurusKitty · 07/06/2026 18:05

She’s infinitely better than Maria Farlow though! And also much less irritating than Selina Wendover, although at least Heyer digs a bit into why both of them are like that.

The Fish may be a bit queer in her attic, but she’s kind enough to be genuinely happy for Kitty despite her worries about being left jobless, & then has enough wit to realise what her best chance of survival is & go ahead & make it happen. She didn’t know that Kitty & Freddy would always make sure she was looked after.

And the Lochinvar exchange makes me laugh every time.

So does Alverstoke’s Baluchistan hound.

I'm ok, thanks. It's everyone else that needs propping up, and that's tiring. Although not their fault.

Late to chip in (been out all day) but I was there for most of last year and part of this and it is utterly exhausting.

So you have my sympathy. Look after yourself (and be kind to yourself), or you won't be able to look after them.

Magpiecomplex · 07/06/2026 16:09

Although it's not far from me, I've never been, so count me in too!

My name is also on the list.
I have read one Georgette Heyer in my life. It was pretty good. I'm not sure why I've never read any more. MIL was a big fan.
Football: zero interest. I liked playing it as a kid, but then the boys got arsey about the girls joining in.

We stopped for petrol today and there were two enormous low loaders parked up with tractors on board. Two were clearly Fendts, from their paint job, but the last one looked a bit too dark a blue to be a New Holland. So while DH did the boring stuff, I and went and had a closer look.

It was a New Holland. Maybe they fade when out in the fields.

We should have a sweepstake to see which of us can be the first to spot an Ursa Ag tractor. Made in Canada, nice and simple, and do not require a long trek back to the main dealer to fix them when they go kaput at a critical time. According to DH, anyway, who saw me admiring the machinery...

Magpiecomplex · 07/06/2026 19:39

Ursa Ag look rather fun, I shall definitely keep an eye out!

I once did a “Ladies’ Driving Challenge” for charity, driving an HGV, road sweeper, Green Goddess and ambulance. I even had a go with the Jaws of Life to open a car door.

Great fun.

I've driven a tractor, obvs, but I still need a "green with envy" reaction to this!

This prompts me to wonder why I never seem to be able to settle down to read nowadays except if I’m on a plane or train or sometimes on holiday. I’m sitting in the kitchen idly MNing or doing a sudoku while periodically checking if it’s stopped raining (I got halfway through some gardening yesterday but every time I think about going outside the rain starts again). Why can’t I go and sit in a comfy chair with the book I started while on holiday?Confused (Or just put on my old coat and go outside anyway).

I thought I was the only one this happens to (she says, being overly dramatic)! I used to love reading, but now I just can't concentrate on more than a few pages. So I move on to a different book, and the same thing happens. I wonder if it's age? It's so disappointing, and not something I ever imagined could happen. Now that I have all the time in the world to read, I can't! 😕

AngleofRepose · 07/06/2026 20:51

I have been in a bouncy castle once, didn't much like the experience. I have never driven a tractor, but I did used to get to drive my best friend's Trans-am quite a lot. Which, I was a teenager, was about as good as it got! (yes, we often lacked Things To Do)

Well, it does mean that I go for more walks, because I can't sit still. But it happens with other projects, too. I'll spend a mad three weeks doing nothing but jigsaw puzzles, barely eating, then suddenly, the moment is gone, and it's three years before I do another puzzle.

AngleofRepose · 07/06/2026 20:56

Bar gerbils, could I have a hot chocolate with little marshmallows, please, and I'll try to sit still and soak up the atmosphere. It's nice not to have to be adventuring for a little while...

Good afternoon. My name is Magpiecomplex, and I'm a Lego addict.

I've just pre-ordered the new Sagrada Familia set. I can see that one being out of stock almost permanently, and didn't want to risk it.

Magpie, I just...
?..just no words, except HOW MUCH???
Do you have space for it? What do you do with it when you're finished?

I just opened the link.
Are you quite sure you're ok?

Hedgehogforshort · 07/06/2026 21:04

On the subject of adult theme activities I loved a big air filled dome that you jump about upon. Athough i would recommend having a pee beforehand.

I think I'm in a minority here, but I enjoy watching footy on the telly, I find it relaxing - as long as as it's something like Gibraltar v the Cayman Islands [that was an actual match today!] and not Ireland v anybody.
Since our men's team didn't make it to the World Cup, I can watch any of it with equanimity - thanks for that. boys😏

I like the skills in football, like being able to run at full tilt while very gently and
deftly guiding a ball in the direction you want it to go, and keeping possession of it, without stepping on it and twisting your ankle. It's like patting your head a rubbing your tummy while running very fast and having 10 people trying to stop you..

With all the politicking going on around it, this World Cup has to be the least anticipated-with-excitement one in living memory.

I'll watch random matches if they're on when I'm having a cuppa in front of the telly. I'm far from being a 'fan'.

But the Gerbil World Cup will be very exciting, I can't wait!
I'm really really looking forward to the spectacular opening ceremony😁

Marie, I don't really care for football (I quite like rugby, but I'm forced to, living in Wales - I think they shoot you here if you say "Rugby? Meh" aloud here).

But I used to quite like the World Cup, because I often got to see different teams play that I wouldn't normally see. My fav was 2002 (?) when it seemed as though South Korea and Japan would go all the way!

I won't be watching this one, however, since I gave up the TV.

It'll last the best part of a year though - I only ever do one or two bags a day, and I use it as a combination mindfulness activity to de-stress and occupational therapy for my hands. It's cheaper than burning out...

The house is full of Lego anyway (not all mine, I hasten to add!) so it's not an uncharacteristic purchase!

Just checking back, and the set I've just finished was bought December 2024. The replacement set that I've opened today but not started yet was bought November 2025. The Sagrada Familia won't be released until November this year. One big set a year isn't really that extravagant, is it?

I can definitely see the mindfulness bit. That's why I like jigsaw puzzles and quilting, it's the repetition and concentration, which just removes everything else I might be worried about. But a lot of the pieces are the same, how do you manage? I think I'd go mad (this from someone who is working through an Algebra for Dummies for fun...)

I guess not if it helps you with mindfulness! It just wouldn't calm me, it would drive me 'round the bend.

They're bagged up in numbered stages, so it's not a case of sitting there surrounded by thousands of pieces all at once. My first couple of big sets were like that and I had boxes and drawers from Screwfix to keep them all straight!

I imagine being on a narrowboat can be quite mindful ? Because you have to concentrate on where you're going?
