These poor girls. An absolutely sickening article.

'Two 15-year-old boys and a boy, 14, were previously convicted of rape following a trial at Southampton Crown Court.
The 15-year-olds were given three-year Youth Rehabilitation Orders with intensive surveillance and supervision. The younger boy's probation supervision will be for one and half years.
Two of the boys' mothers burst into tears as Judge Nicholas Rowland told the attackers "none of you need to go to prison today".
The judge praised the bravery of the two girls for giving evidence.'

How is surveillance/supervision going to make the slightest bit of difference? These boys should have gone to prison or a YOI.

Judge praises girls for their bravery while failing to dish out any consequences whatsoever.

Better than nothing I guess.

I just saw this and came to post it, disappointingly short sentences, but at least they didn't walk out again.

I can imagine that if the sentencing for such abhorrent crimes is so inadequate, it could well lead to reprisals from people in the community who feel justice hasn't been done/ unsafe around such individuals.

Although this is a lot better than just letting them walk free.

I think Z was the one that didn't actually carry out a rape, although he filmed and encouraged the others.

Abhorrent but I can see why his sentence would be lesser.

They will only serve 15 months!

A bit different from the widely publicised 4 years.

Time served in custody already will be taken into account -which seems fair enough, doesn't it?
I don't know what the rule is about reducing whatever is left, but it should add up to 4 years in total, not 15 months.

I'm saying that from a different angle from the obvious one of justice/doing the time/etc.

I'm look at it from the point of view of the boys themselves - they are children, some of you may have sons the same age, and there has to be some attempt to take them away from the environment in which they became child-rapists, some effort to show them a different way to live and behave, and some hope that they might actually learn and change and be better young men when they are released from the detention they deserve.

I can almost hear the scoffing as I write that, but education and rehabilitation should at least be attempted during their deserved incarceration.
There's some possibility that it will make a difference over 4 years; over 15 months, it's highly unlike to even make a dent in their learnt violence and misogyny.

I think the perpetrators, and potentially society, would benefit from spending more time in custody in a youth rehabilitation centre, not less.

They didn't serve time in custody
They were under curfew and that's what's being taken off their already paltry sentence.

In that case, I think the full 4 years in a youth rehabilitation centre is the only hope for them, and for society.

They won't serve four years,time off for when under curfew,then time off for good behaviour whilst in custody
That all comes off their sentence.

Usually serve half a sentence in custody, but there’s also an early release scheme now meaning prisoners serve even less time ..

Theyll barely serve more than 18 months in my opinion..

How do you deal with them then? Do you brainwash them to not be abusive scumbags?
They obviously need 'help' with how they think about women and girls.

Sadly that ship has sailed. There were 2 girls attacked but the total of rapes was actually 11...go figure what they actually did...

I'm glad that the rapists now have a lifetime ban on contacting the girls they abused.

I meant going forward so it's not repeated. They will be out soon.

Anyone convicted of rape regardless of age should not walk.
Should be a meaningful custodial term every time.
And should being the operative word.

You also want them not to be a danger on release and repeat the violence.

What I meant was I don't think their attitude to women and girls can be changed much now. They probably blame the girls for them being banged up.

I’m sure they have no remorse and probably in their cells angry that at the girl for sending them behind bars.

They are and always will be a threat to women.
