I’ve just started to watch; Buck Angel opening, which was never something I thought I’d see at Cambridge University - but this is how the de programming begins.

Agreed. As I understood it, that was the crux of the first opposition speech. He seemed happy to fall on his sword as an old man who will leave the complexity to the younger folk.

I didn't get that so much as he is taking a broader view and doesn't feel the current disagreements are material compared to the progress that has been made in his lifetime. Maybe we're all inclined to take "modern" as being our own lifetime so he's discussing an entirely different perspective to the students.

I took it very much as him celebrating how life is now easier for gay men than it was thirty years ago.

I mean, great. But It seemed pretty tone deaf to the problems of lesbians, women and children.

I’m now seeing clips of other random YouTubers dissecting her speech positively I have no idea who I watched last night but she was pregnant, American and I didn’t really feel she normally talked about these issues as a main. Her tag line was “Mic Drop!”

It really was a mic drop

I hope the bbc gets her on to discuss and debate.

c’mon woman’s hour! Be brave!

”Brave” and “Woman’s Hour” are rarely seen in the same sentence.

Oh, I definitely took that from it. That was his main message - so perhaps my use of the word "crux" was not ideal in hindsight.

But on a few occasions he acknowledged that some activism within the "LGBTQ+" (I can't remember which variant of the acronym he used) went too far. He seemed to hand wave that away though, each time he said it, as if it really didn't matter because without it (going too far) he wouldn't be able to live freely as he can today.

It all seemed rather muddled, because the freedom to live as he can today didn't require an overreach of activism at all. So my takeaway was that if only he had thought a little harder (and listened to the many people who had patiently explained the overreach to him - I know he's not new to this) he would recognise that he really didn't need any trans rights activism at all.... and if he thought harder still he would realise that under such activism, he would be called transphobic if he didn't accept a female (who identifies as a man) as a gay man. Instead, he just played the old man card and handed the baton over to the younger gay men to continue the "fight".... which was gladly taken by Sammy the Twerp, who gave a tedious speech about hate, which was (ironically) a hate-filled rant with no substance.

In other words, I felt he was a whisker away from agreeing with the motion but couldn't be bothered to think hard enough to get there.

Webberley just comes across as really sinister. Like Umbridge in Harry Potter with her fake "kind" voice saying things that might appear kind on the surface but not quite being able to hide the undercurrent of true evil that underlies every she says.

53 abstentions.

That is an interesting breakdown.

Its a public vote, in a way? You have to walk out a certain path.

The abstentions are the quiet majority who don't speak up. Such a large number abstaining is itself instructive.

Be very interesting to see an anon ballot.
