I think this is right
“My sense is that people are fed up with the thought police. They’re fed up with the taste police and they’re fed up with overtly, or in some cases covertly, censoring shows or so-called problematic acts out of the cultural sphere.”
but it's always been right. The problem is it's the gatekeepers; the bookers, the publishers, stop the general public from giving their input in the first place. We don't know how much 'wrong think' was stopped from ever getting an audience because a minority of bigots in influential positions stopped them from being given a chance. How much never made it outside of the artist's head because of self censorship, they knew to try to put it on the page, even give it breath, would be to risk career suicide.
