National/Herald refuse to carry political ad unless word 'woman' is removed

Astonishing.

Independence for Scotland Party reports with images from email from National/Herald. The editor/s say after 'strong feedback from readers' they refuse to carry adverts from this small political party in the National, but will carry ads in the Herald if the word 'woman' is removed.

Attaching images, hope they will work.

'This statement responds to the decision by @ScotNational
to refuse future advertising from the Independence for Scotland Party following so called “reader feedback" and to the conditional offer from The Herald to carry an advert only if it removes any reference to women. This raises serious concerns about censorship, political gatekeeping and the suppression of legitimate debate in Scotland’s media. '

I'm not sure why they are accusing the Scottish Herald of being an 'arm of the British state'? That description hardly applies to the SNP!

As long as ... there is no reference to women in the ad

It feels impossible to fully grasp the magnitude of that statement.

As said up thread, I am sure if it was about women as housewives or mothers it would be okay.

It is about women declaring their autonomous sex based rights and those who support them.

It's generally considered to be a Unionist leaning paper.

For god's sake, don't mention women.

It's taking 'invisible women' to a whole new level, really.

They want our votes, so long as we keep our mouths shut and don't make problems.

And for that matter, it's also increasingly considered that the SNP have no real desire for indie, either. They're doing very nicely on those large salaries, thank you, and have no wish to get off the bus anytime soon.

Women must wheesht!

Which paper ran the good accounts of the Sandie Peggie tribunal? I know one was distinguished by its accuracy and detail.

The Herald's stance, I hope. I wonder if anyone legally qualified was consulted before this email was sent.

It amazes me the highly contentious and possibly actionable stuff people actually put in writing..

Has this been authenticated? Who wrote it? What was their position?
It's so off-the-wall blatant - refusing to publish the ad at all in one paper, accepting it but without the word 'woman' in another, it 's hard to imagine anyone with a glimmer of common sense writing this down!

The Courier, I'd say.

IIRC, the Scottish Sunday Post was quite good, as well as being good on women's rights generally. Agree with a pp, that the Courier have been good.

The National is a ridiculous paper with a ridiculously low circulation and the editor made herself ridiculous with that smug, sneering video about TWWWW and the National Library of Scotland. Which she was completely wrong about. Don't remember a retraction or apology.

Neither do they have a desire to not have big bad Westminister to blame when things go tits up.

ArabellaScott · 21/04/2026 20:17

The National barely merits the title of newspaper tbh.

The oft quoted scoff is that their circulation is lower than that of The Beano.

Marion Scott at Sunday Post has been excellent. I make a point of buying the paper to support her work.

It was actually The Herald.

I have a postal vote and I've voted for the ISP candidate.

Sorry, I've misqoted, they say they will carry ad so long as 'there is no reference to women'.

How do they feel about “ adult human female” instead?

Yes, that was why I subscribed to them in the first place.

That's a blast from the past. We used to get the Sunday Post when I was growing up. It always seemed to be running features with titles like New Ways with Mince. Grin
