Calling MNer @fifer where are you?!

You get a very special call out in the end of this interesting "behind the scenes" glimpse by Naomi Cunningham and Charlotte Elves, where they discuss trial strategies and how junior counsel can gain valuable experience and also benefit a case!

Sharing the advocacy

The client’s best interests could be well-served by sharing the advocacy with junior counsel more often than you might think – Naomi Cunningham and Charlotte Eves explore some less orthodox ways to divide the speaking role

'The cases we’ve done together have all been in the area of the ‘gender wars’: the cluster of issues arising out of the clash between gender identity theory, which holds that gender identity trumps sex, and a man is a woman if he says he is, and sex realism (or gender-critical belief), which holds that biological sex is binary, immutable and important. These cases tend to attract intense press attention, and they are often live-tweeted, and avidly followed and picked over on Mumsnet. We’ll leave the last word to one of the Mumsnet analysts, ‘Fifer’:

‘Ah telt ye they’d gie the young team a run oot. Never been rang yit… here is the path doon the gairden, let me lead you by the haun. She’s guid. NC is no even needing to raise a finger.’'

I read that today! Was delighted to see the mumsnet and fifer references.

Oh, I like that.

Thanks - great article. Would love to be a fly on the wall when the CunningElves are testing strategy!

@singthing Fifer is a made-up everyman/everywoman who I put into my transcript posts offering their take on the happenings, rather than an actual person. Some of the quotes were definitely NSFW due to rather industrial language but that's how a lot of normal folk speak in Fife, like the voices of my relatives and neebors growing up there in the 80s.

Datun · 14/04/2026 12:15

'industrial language'.

Ooh, I'm so nicking that.

Well done Bez, btw. You obviously struck a chord.

BezMills · 14/04/2026 16:03

You're too kind @Datun

I don't think I could top that, and was quite happy to pass the baton to others, who carried on the good work of transcription and did it very well. I'm especially thinking of Myrtle, who put in a power of shifts, sometimes doing two at once!
