All females welcome for intelligent discourse and non-harmful comestibles.

This is one of my lockdown efforts.

That’s gorgeous, @FuzzyPuffling.

MarieDeGournay · 12/04/2026 21:27

How could you temporarily forget that you quilt?😄

Some of us, like me, don't do any needlework at all and admire those who do.
I hope you'll post photos of some of your quilting for us to admire.

Sometimes we talk about languages and sometimes we talk about tractors and sometimes about dogs and cats, but I think it's fair to say that crafts, esp the needleworky kind, are a regular topic. Often with photosSmile
I just glanced at the new posts that appeared while I was typing this, and there's an example of just what I was saying - that's beautiful, Fuzzy!

Oh isn't that gorgeous!! I'm in awe of the geometry... I tend to do very large, bed size quilts with a lot less geometry. I find piecing very frustrating, hence the learning to hand quilt so I can start a whole-cloth quilt.

Magpiecomplex · 12/04/2026 21:27

@DeanElderberry I've just realised I misread your opening post. I thought it said intelligent discourse and non-intelligent comestibles.

I'm not sure which version I prefer.

One coffee and Gertrude is very shy but she wants you to sign your Be Polite poem. She's a big fan.

The coffee is gratefully received and I will sign with pleasure!

(For Gertrude's sake, do not search the gifs using coffee gerbil as a search term. I have learned my lesson)

Oooh oooh me too...no woolly stuff but paper patchwork is my favourite.

<Breathes sigh of relief at another non- knitter appearing>

I can knit (sort of) but if I started a scarf now, it might be ready for winter next year. Maybe.

Cross stitching is more my line but my backs are not neat, I fear. More a morass of tangled threads.

Boiledbeetle · 12/04/2026 21:35

AngleofRepose · 12/04/2026 21:25

I'll just sit here in a corner and soak up the atmosphere while I suck the cream off the top of my hot chocolate with a straw, trying not to make too much noise. It's been decades since I've been in a pub!

<oops! almost sat on a gerbil, not a great start >

I wouldn't worry, some of them like to pretend they're cushions.

AngleofRepose · 12/04/2026 21:36

Well, I know more about the dark side of the moon (being topical) than I do about tractors, but I am interested in languages, and fascinated by etymology. I have, in the past, studied Spanish, Latin, German, and Welsh. Just starting to think I must get back to my Welsh, join a group, see if I can still form a coherent sentence. There's a pub group starting up near me, so might go along next week.

I have enjoyed following some of your language discussions.

Hello @Waitwhat23 and @AngleofRepose

Welcome to the Bluestocking, the last bastion of sanity and sense (occasionally) among the chaos of the FSG threads.

Bar gerbil, I'll have a hot chocolate, with a shot of Tia Maria please.

Hello WW23, I wasn't here when you arrived, so belated welcome, and i hope you're having a nice quiet read in one of the many cozy corners in the Bluestocking - it's magic that way, it looks square-ish but there are as many corners as lovers of cozy cornersSmile

The gerbils have a noble history - I believe their Creation Myth is somebody using the phrase 'Foucault-addled grievance gerbils' to describe the easily-offended. This was deemed perfect for a t-shirt, and somehow the gerbils decided to take ownership of the gerbil-related IP and set up their own t-shirt factory....
all of this was aided and abetted by AI-generated images of the talented little rodents, and one thing led to another and here you are, being served an excellent coffee by a gerbil.

You see, it's all very sensible and not baffling at all😁

In short, a funny reference to 'grievance gerbils' took off, and we've been having fun with them ever since; you have to admit, they are very very cute, aren't they?Smile

Thank you for the history synopsis. I seem to remember the beginning of the t-shirts but found it as baffling as the Mornington Crescent threads.

I (cough) actually have a soft spot for Guinea Pigs (though I like gerbils) - would they be allowed in this salubrious establishment? Perhaps as snack distributors?

I've never tried cross stitch, but did dabble in something called Bargello needlework yonks ago. Yes, the back was messy.

More about the cosmology of the Bluestocking universe - it is located in a place called ... sorry I don't remember, somebody will have to fill in that gap, which is at the foot of a hill called Peak Woo. Which turned out to be a semi-active volcano in a past thread😮but it seems to be dormant again now, don't worry.

It is women-only, but there is one exception: a male dachshund called Colin. I've no idea why. Maybe he lived her before the Bluey took over the premises, or something..

There's a pub for blokes down the road a bit called The Staunch Ally.

Finding that gerbils were so much fun, we then started acquiring other cute animals - capybaras, who do the maintenance around the place; a red panda called Rosie who does domestic visits with hugs for those who need them; a giant wombat who does the accounts, I think; basically anything cute that a Bluestockinger sees a photo of and goes aaaawwwww! can end up here.

I introduced the Husky Rat because .... well, need I say more, look at this for cutenessSmile

I have explained about Colin before - I accidentally brought him to a Bluestocking in about 2017 and he’s been here ever since.

Is your cushion machine sewn or hand sewn? I didn't have my own sewing machine until I was about 30, so everything had to be done by hand. It takes ages, endless!

Of course I looked. It was going quite well until the exploding one!

Gertrude is currently in the staffroom and has come over all giggly! You've made a gerbil very happy.

Anyway, bonsoir! No pudding for me, thanks - I’m full of coq au vin and trying hard not to lapse into franglais. While you lot were all flying I arrived via tunnel.

I am guessing it has elements of L-space also or would that not be ideal from a security point of view?

Colin seems very sweet - he would very much suit a bow tie collar.

The guinea pigs garden.
Beatrice Potter showed them doing so. See images from the gardens this very afternoon...

Oh, and I've also been listening in to your bird discussions, and how to tell one little brown job from another. I have a wren in my garden that is so tame now (or, used to me) that she comes up to explore the potted plants on my patio, right under the kitchen window. And a Goldcrest, and a Robin with a parasite under his eye, who gets under my feet, waiting for food, while I am trying to dig. And various others, including a Sparrowhawk

Boiledbeetle · 12/04/2026 21:53

@FuzzyPuffling and @AngleofRepose Clara's got the crew working late. The quilting nook should be ready by breakfast.

Right on L-space and Colin. The former probably connects to the BS via a paternoster which only women can use.

I don't crochet and I don't knit. <has a think>
oh but I do quilt!
Well, when I say I quilt, I have made an awful lot of patchwork quilts, but I'm really lazy about the quilting bit.
Hoping to teach myself proper hand quilting when I get motivated.

I hand-quilted a quilt once. Never again.
I found the tying technique suitably speedy.

But if you want to do whole-cloth, then you have to do it by hand, really.

I haven't made a quilt in... probably 20 years.
