The mistreatment of women in the military is not new. For decades, there have been harrowing reports of sexual harassment, assault, and rape.

For the past three years, victims of crime within the forces have been supported by a specialist unit. Its typical workload? Some 500 cases at a time.

Now Channel 4 News has been given exclusive access to see it in action.

And a warning, this report contains descriptions of rape and assault that some may find distressing.

Thanks for sharing. It’s depressing that a dedicated unit is needed to deal with this, but I hope to god that serious change is made. It’s an intense life in the military, it’s not just a job you leave at the end of the day - you’re part of a whole community, and women absolutely need to be safe an respected within that community.

I only half listened to it while it was being broadcast and having found the clip of it thought I would share.

Have not had time to listen but I think one of the support workers said they were currently supportin 400 women.

Not sure of the number of women in the armed forces, but even 1 is to many.

No wonder they need a special unit, particularly as in the past the male dominited higher tier in the army "investigated" claims of sexual violence.

I know suicide is not usually the result of one single factor but some very young women in the army have taken their own lives and sexual assault and mismanagement by the army have been in the mix.

I know, I remember watching a news report some time ago now, on one such woman.

It was heartbreaking.

It had been her big dream - to sign up.

Shocking it is still happening.

Not forgetting so many young men signing up in more recent years will have had the full "benefit" of online incel culture.

Just as it is a problem for Universities.

Young men, away from home, having their sexism and violence reinforced by other young men.

I'm not the only one who hangs around FWR who was in the Army in the 80s. Nothing - but nothing, in fact it seems worse now - has changed. Despite promises made BACK THEN. 40 years later... here we still are.
