Feminism: Sex and gender discussions
ConstanzeMozart · 03/04/2026 15:56

So anyone raising objections can just be told, 'it's not meant to be real, it's an alternative history.'
Sneaky.

The casting call describes it as ‘an emotional and funny alternative history that takes place in the time of the Tudor court’ and expressly asks for applications from actors who identify as ‘transgender women’.

I wish some brilliant male actors, good at pretending to be ‘trans gender women’ would come forward to audition.

SwearOnChanel · 04/04/2026 11:55

Could it be regarded as discrimination? Actors are actors, professionals who are pretending to be something else regardless of their sex or whatever they might identify...

Blackadder did it better:

Nursie recalls the birth of Queenie, exclaiming: "A boy without a winkle? God be praised, it is a miracle. A boy without a winkle!".

I don't think they realised this was fictional comedy.

heathspeedwell · 04/04/2026 12:58

She can't possibly be a transwoman. We can see from her portraits that she doesn't do the head tilt.

Oooooo I love a “was elizabeth I a man” thread. It gives me the opportunity to mention our local folklore.

Apparently Henry VIII was on a hunting trip in our local forest and brought baby Elizabeth with him. Sadly the young princess died and the only red head headed baby the villagers could find was a a boy. So they did a swap!

This story has been going around here for many many years!!

This is the only thing that makes sense, but surely, what we know of Henry, he would have said “Oh well, it’s only a girl” and shrugged it off?

YourAmplePlumPoster · 05/04/2026 10:07

It's like a sketch from Monty Python.

Swamphag · 05/04/2026 16:33

Could actual women apply to audition? Because I fear they may be setting a precedent here by saying that only transwomen can play transwomen. Because if that's the case then surely no transwoman can be cast as in a female role - they're explicitly saying that there's a difference between women and transwomen. Isn't this just terribly, terribly transphobic?
I'm sure there'll be some mind bending reason why this isn't the case and that transwomen are definitely the same as women unless circumstances dictate that being trans offers some kind of advantage (despite being marginalised and downtrodden)

Remember the hounding that Eddie Redmayne got for playing The Danish Girl?

A male actor playing a trans woman wasn’t good enough apparently, it should have been a trans actor. According to the trans lobby, a man in a dress just reinforced harmful stereotypes.

Yeah lads, no shit.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 05/04/2026 17:10

Maybe someone just thought there must have been a typing error and so changed Lizard to Lesbian?

DameAlis · 05/04/2026 22:05

The late, great Glenda Jackson was the best Queen Elizabeth. Cate Blanchett & Judi Dench would be quite close behind. Anyone else would be a travesty

WittyLimeBiscuit · 06/04/2026 08:22

When I first saw this, I thought it was an April fool.
Sadly not. Why does every strong woman have to be turned into a man?
Am so sick of this bollox.

It doesn't seem to have occurred to any of these idiots that, if Queen Elizabeth had been a boy, there would have been no need for Henry VIII to get rid of Anne Boleyn in his desperation to sire an heir.

Edited

So true, I can’t believe itv have commissioned such a rediculous drama that has zero basis in facts. The history of the era was very well documented. Elizabeth I wasn’t trans, wasn’t a man and wasn’t a lesbian. She was a phenomenally strong woman in an age when men held all the power. She simply didn’t want to relinquish her power to a man, that’s why she never married.
