MNHQ AI wont let me title my thread

IwantToRetire · 11/03/2026 18:12

I've just started a thread based on a facebook report from WRN Derby.

I found the layout for starting a thread has changed and the title comes AFTER you enter your message.

I dont know if they are using AI to create "acceptable" titles, but that isn't the point.

The thread was a direct quote of the authors.

MNHQ are NOT our editors.

Where has these babying attitude come from.

Was there a consultation?

If so I missed it.

Are feminists really so unreliable that MNHQ are handing over how our public face is created by thread titles, is not one we can control. But AI can.

WTF??????????????????

OP posts:
IwantToRetire · 11/03/2026 18:16

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐀𝐃 𝐃𝐄𝐂𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐍𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋 𝐖𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐍'𝐒 𝐃𝐀𝐘 𝐈𝐍 𝐃𝐄𝐑𝐁𝐘

is the title MNHQ AI refused and turned it into some wishy washy "discussion about IWD"

Talk about nullifying

It’s only a suggested title that comes up, though, isn’t it? You don’t have to ‘click to use’ - you can carry on with the one you wrote.

MotherofPufflings · 11/03/2026 18:21

How do you mean it refused it? Would it not let you post with that title?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/03/2026 18:22

Discussed in Site Stuff. It was causing at least one other user problems in starting a thread. Probably a software glitch rather than an objection to the wording. A completely unnecessary change as far as I'm concerned. https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/site_stuff/5502154-new-feature-suggested-thread-titles-when-posting?reply=151033448

FreshInks · 11/03/2026 18:22

In theory you should be able to delete and use your own title, but I tried to do it and it won’t let me change the title to one I have written myself.

IwantToRetire · 11/03/2026 18:51

It wont let you post. Even when I made the original WRN Derby title blander (which was quite bland to begin with) it wouldn't let me post.

And it certainly wouldn't let me post the title that I wanted for this thread!

Apart from anything else who the F+++ do they think they are to tell us we need AI to title our threads.

How dumb is that.

Install a spell checker, or do something useful like have the title of a thread repeated at the bottom so you can check which thread you are on.

The mentality behind this is what gets me.

MNHQ are NOT editors. Neither is AI.

Added to which it is totally pointless as 9 times out a 10 a thread that starts as being about topic Y gets hijacked by some only vaguely related issue, or 2 posters endlessly going back and forth about some minutiae.

The whole concept is so totally against the whole function of a forum I just cant imagine who thought it was a good idea, let alone how whoever takes decisions, agreed to it.

The attitudes seems to be we are such naughty girls its one thing letting us have a voice, but MN doesn't want their public face to be associated with the titles that posters on FWR compose.

Edited

It's site wide, not just on FWR.

Well I hope others are complaining.

What a patronising pointless change.

Would really like to hear from whichever self important person thought is was a good idea, explain.

Let alone implement without discussing with users first.

Since we have a thread for griping about the platform, my biggest gripe is that it's a social medium that doesn't allow public reactions to posts, so instead of being able just to click a thumbs up icon to indicate agreement with a post one has to quote it, which makes the thread tedious for everyone to read.

Also, since one can't edit quotations, the only way to quote only the relevant snippet is to cut, paste, format and remember to tag the person you're quoting in case she fancies exercising her right to respond.

Perhaps it’s worth remembering this forum is free for anyone to use? Additionally, I’m sure they don’t have a particular vendetta against FWR posters.

i copyed the title you wanted to use and put that in before writing the main message and it seemed ok ?

GarlicFound · 12/03/2026 00:20

I hadn't seen this feature, so just tried it. I typed:

amsdnkltirl alkdj;eolfks,fnm, ambdhjegwry7en mabd abdwkudheowph.

Suggested title:

Tried Mumsnet title suggestions with nonsense text in sex and gender

Fair enough 😂😂

They did react quite quickly to criticism.

I think (haven't read all the site stuff posts) but when first implemented the AI title was the default.

Now it is an option for those who cant think as a title.

Something being free doesn't mean it can be incompetent. This was clearly a techie glitch, and anyone, including those doing work for free, would take the precaution of testing before implementing.

And nowhere did I say it was a vendetta against FWR.

Confused

Posting only a snippet of a quote would risk things being taken out of context. I would rather see the whole thread

It very much depends how you access it. I use it through the browser of a tablet and have full functionality. On my phone I use an app and it’s a bit basic.

As for OP’s point, while I get your concern, the number of titles that OP has to ask to be edited because it’s misleading (usually unintentionally), I’m not surprised MN felt there was a need for it!

If you are referring to me that is total BS.

Name me one title I have asked to be changed because it is misleading.

But it would be easy to list the ones I have asked to be changed because of typos.

Honestly some of the bizarre comments some make about individuals are just plain weird!

Bless, no! Not you!

The OPs of other threads who get asked the same question again and again because there’s something misleading in the title. Or no one knows what’s going on because nothing makes sense- maybe the title contradicts the first post or similar.
