Winter Paralympics 2026: The 'mixed' team event with one woman

Despite Para-ice hockey being a 'mixed' event at the Winter Paralympics, just one female player will compete at Milan-Cortina.

Unless there are a bunch of TiFsHmm in the teams this is pretty damning

In the 32 years since its debut in Lillehammer, only four have been selected - even though there is an optional 18th place in the squad reserved for a woman.

This year, just one woman will compete out of 135 entrants.

But maybe there are not sufficient women who can and want to play ice hockey at the Paralympics? Maybe this gives her a chance to play which she would not otherwise have.

Overall, the sex balance at the winter Paralympics is very male skewed, and womens sled hockey has only just had its first world championship so I guess it is a matter of number of players out there - wheelchair rugby is also mixed but predominantly male

It sounds like there’s a good few keen women’s teams out there though.

It is clear that men have an advantage in the sport but instead of making a women’s competition they make the women compete with the men.

Compare and contrast with the creation of a trans category in some elite sports to suit a certain demographic which attracted zero competitors.

Women's para ice hockey edges closer to its own Paralympic stage

When the Paralympics begin in Italy, one sport that won't be in the competition is women's para ice hockey. But after a successful World Championships, players hope it could be added in the future.

In the Olympics there was a mixed ski Ariel jumping thingie. Three competitors, and you could choose the mix but one has to be a woman. Every time bar the Aussie went for two blokes and one woman. The Aussies had a lack of high calibre athletes so went for two women and a bloke. The scoring was different for men and women to level the playing field but it didn't really give much of a chance for that cos clearly the blokes dominated anyway.

As it went the Aussies come 4th out of 7 but they had the silver medal winner from the women's event.

It was kinda depressing tbh.

There has to be grass roots sports to create the Olympic level - there would have to be a concerted push to get it going, and across enough countries. Ice based games are pretty niche in the UK and I guess the authorities think there are other sports worth developing instead. My daughter has a disability and they do push certain sports at the disabled community.
