Women's Wrestling

In the 1990s, DH and I used to watch a lot of wrestling. Watched the Rock's first ever appearance, loved The Undertaker, Mankind, Stone Cold Steve Austin- fantastic. Only bad things- no real women wrestlers, Chyna as a bodyguard, a few manipulative women managers or partners 😞 ....

Just watched a 6 woman Elimination Match at a pay per view!!! Alexa Bliss, Kiana James, Raquel, Tiffany Stratton, Ahsoka and Rhea Ripley. All distinct, named personalities and styles, praised for power and skill, DH cheering on massive Goth Girl Rhea Ripley, although his favourite is Iyo Skye - mental, bubbly, tiny, Japanese wrestler. It was a great match, lots of jumping off things, somersaults, throwing opponents into steel cages...a proper match. The next match is a women's singles match.

In the WWE behind the scenes show, HHH (the manager) says how the women's roster is the best to work with - collaboration not egos, positive and professional.

I never thought I would see such a massive change in my lifetime. It makes me a bit weepy sometimes to see how far these amazing women have come and the space they have conquered.

Add to that the soccer, the rugby...hopefully some things are going in the right direction 😀

And yes, I did accidentally paste this in the main AIBU page but I'm leaving it there!!!

I can't say I've ever watched the stuff but I'm glad it's a success story for the women involved More power to them. 😁.

Apparently women's wrestling has been going on for decades. Especially true for Japan and Mexico

I've never heard anything about the wrestling in Japan but isn't Mexico the place where they wear mask's and nobody knows the real person behind the mask. 😁

Yeah it's come a long way since the days of the "Divas Championship" pmsl on WWE.

They did one of those reality shows, can't remember the name, where a bunch of model/actresses were in a comp to get trained up for WWE.

Two of the ppl that came out of that were the Bella Twins, who couldn't wrestle, but they looked good and were marketable. That was a reasonably long time ago but they made a reappearance recently on the Royal Rumble - they were still shit and massively overshadowed by a lot of actual talent.

The fact there's more than enough good wrestlers to even do a Royal Rumble is brilliant. And credit to Triple H and Stephanie for steering it into a good product.

But there's been some amazing female talent for a long time, and not just in WWE to be fair, other productions have also had good female competition, but they're not the big ones I guess.

Huge fan of Paige when she started in NXT and then came up to WWE. Easy to cheer for a Brit tbf but she had the moves to back it up 😍 great ambassador for women's wrestling.

I've never been in to sport as a personal interest but my dad and other half have always watched rugby union and cricket. I'm really glad any women's sport is getting the recognition it deserves. It's not that long ago the IOC thought our insides would fall out if we completed in certain sports FFS.

The WWF used to hire Japanese female wrestlers back in the 90's to try and pad out the roster at events.

So it's been about for a while, just not front and centre like it is today.
