DH told me he'd seen a post about this on FB a couple of weeks ago, but at first I couldn't find anything to substantiate it apart from a reddit post. This article does seem to confirm it. I came to MN to see if there was a post about it, but can't see anything.

European Parliament declares trans women are women. What does this mean and does it have any bearing on UK trans rights? - The New Feminist

The European Parliament has adopted a recommendation on trans inclusion, calling for “the full recognition of trans women as women”.

The UK is no longer part of the EU, so they can say what they like, it has no bearing on UK law.

A the article says:
For the UK, the immediate legal effect is basically none. The UK is not an EU member state, and this European Parliament recommendation does not change UK law. Even if the EU were passing binding legislation, it would not automatically apply here.

RosieHosie · 26/02/2026 16:27

I know that, but can't help thinking it might add fuel to the TRA fire

I think it was covered, the group who proposed it are going to take it to the UN, it's only a recommendation so it has no legal standing, but then Stonewell Law had no standing and look what happen with that.

It's time to disaggregate totally from the EU.

AI says…

Fact-Check Breakdown:

  • The Resolution: Approved with 340 votes to 141, this non-binding text addresses EU priorities for the UN Commission on the Status of Women.
  • Key Content: It emphasizes recognizing trans women for the effectiveness of anti-violence and equality measures.
  • Scope: It advises member states to guarantee trans women access to protection services.
  • Legal Status: This is a symbolic, non-binding political move, not a direct change to national laws.
  • Context: The vote aimed to counter anti-trans rhetoric and rejected amendments focused on biological definitions of pregnancy.

I don’t think it actually says the male Transpersons are women.

nocoolnamesleft · 26/02/2026 16:34

Well done! You’ve found it! The one and only good thing to have come out of the debacle of Brexit: that this does not apply to us.

Myalternate · 26/02/2026 16:51

🤔 I could be wrong of course.

Many of them were saying they were going to flee immediately to the EU after seeing this.

Conveniently forgetting it's not quite as easy to do that as it was 10 years ago!

MarieDeGournay · 26/02/2026 17:20

The only consolation for those of us living in the EU is that 'transwomen are women' is beginning to sound old-fashioned. Thank you Terf Islanders for keeping the flame litSmile

ScarlettSunset · 26/02/2026 18:24

What's a definition of pregnancy that isn't biological? That has confused me.

BunnyBunbunbun · 26/02/2026 19:10

Can anyone quote the actual part of the documented that was voted on where the "EU declares that transwomen are women"?

A parliamentary vote on a recommendation to the Council as to what EU priorities should be for a session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, or whatever this vote is for, does not in any way man that "the EU declares transwomen are women", by the way. Unfortunate as it is, the sentence that refers to transwomen is just one sentence in a very long document with some good stuff in it - none of which is a declaration by the EU on anything, however. And that's just the draft version. I somehow doubt the European Council is going to raise the issue of transwomen.

They could pass a motion that kittens were aliens from the planet zog, it wouldn't really mean anything or achieve anything.

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 26/02/2026 20:01

They could pass a motion

I read that and I giggled, I think my second childhood has begun. 😂
Girls giggle at that sort of thing as well.

Llamasarellovely · 26/02/2026 21:09

Yeah, they're not though. And everyone knows that.

Why are lawmakers not seeing how ridiculous this looks to ordinary people (Democrats, looking at you too). Once you pretend men are women, why would anyone take you seriously?

Maybe it'll mean they'll all move away. India Willoughby has already said he's not staying here for his old age. Good riddance quite frankly

It's the circle jerk thing isn't it? They're all performing to each other.

?????? !!! ????

Sorry, words have failed me.

WTAF 😱

TheMorgenmuffel · 27/02/2026 09:17

Of course it does.

If trans woman were women they'd be being told to calm down, that they are being hysterical, that they need to Be Kind and not make a fuss.

So really was just a bit of mad burbling then. 🙄

dhinwiz · 27/02/2026 09:49

Does it mean it'll be less safe for women in EU? Maybe it already is...

UtopiaPlanitia · 01/03/2026 00:56

I'm finding the EU officials' increasing desire to push their preferred social messaging onto member states extremely tiresome.

Dillydollydingdong · 01/03/2026 00:59

The EU are wrong then, aren't they? If the person has XY chromosomes, it's a male.
