“Heated Rivalry” author Rachel Reid on J. K. Rowling - “the bar is pretty high in how evil you have to be,” “ I’m extremely the opposite of everything she believes”

Well, this is disappointing.

”[Reid] has a keen desire not to disappoint her fans, especially when they’re sending her photos of freshly inked tattoos of her words on their skin. ‘I know of another author that a lot of people got tattoos of but then wanted them gone. Like, J. K. Rowling,’ she says. ‘The bar is pretty high for how evil you have to be, but I don’t want to let a single person down.’ I ask if she’s a TERF. ‘No, I’m extremely the opposite of everything she believes,’ she replies.”

Well, too late, she let me down. “Extremely the opposite of everything she believes,” huh? I guess Rachel Reid thinks teenage girls should be forced to undress after PE in front of naked male classmates who gawp as their dicks get hard. Or that female inmates should be locked in cells with male inmates serving time for serial rape.

I don’t expect Reid to agree with Rowling on trans issues. It’s the monstering of Rowling that I take issue with - the “evil,” and the framing of Rowling as so extreme that Reid feels the need to be extremely the opposite of everything she believes.

Edit: title should read “on how evil you have to be”

It does seem that you have a deep prejudice about her.

The premise of the thread is why JKR is considered evil. I'm simply explaining why. That you 'forget' this is indicative of your own bias not mine.

And what exactly has amplifying women's voices in Iran to westerners on twitter achieved? Their freedom? Exactly the opposite: manufacturing public consent to their country becoming an economic basket case like Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan via military intervention that only serves to further enslave women.

Outcomes matter & she's smart enough to know exactly where this is going. Shame on her!

‘Don’t listen to women’s voices’

Talk about evil.

Yep. You are doing a great job.

We understand that you expect her to be someone who campaigns only for the issues you feel are permitted. Anything outside of that, you feel ever so righteously justified for demonising her.

You consider her, a writer and not an elective member of parliament, to be a universal cause campaigner and to follow your personal standards of ethics.

I must’ve completely missed where you’ve explained how and why she is considered evil. Probably because you’ve said absolutely nothing that explains how she is evil. Well nothing that makes any sense.

Where has it been expressed on this thread?

I’m confused.

No men are allowed in a single sex space for women. There is no test to establish whether they are more or less representative of men. That is the point.

Helleofabore · 24/02/2026 08:39

It is surprising though that we have moved now from some posters defending abusive men’s actions over their victim. We are now onto the tantrums of ‘she doesn’t campaign for what I expect an author of fiction books to campaign for’!

Something about being responsible for the situation in the Middle East I think.

She is a symbol for western imperialism, I think. And is helping the far right???

Interesting. How, I wonder?

Coatsoff42 · 24/02/2026 08:48

Who is evil if they talk about Iran?

a) everyone except @Aisha176
b) all women
c) all white women
d) just JK Rowling

it is a confusing world.

Helleofabore · 24/02/2026 08:48

TheKeatingFive · 24/02/2026 08:43

Interesting. How, I wonder?

By only amplifying women’s voices that seek to change the current Iran regime, it seems. And not amplifying enough voices from other countries with human rights I justices.

I think the idea is if she doesn’t campaign for everyone she should just STFU. Same sentiment different thread, different poster names.

And I think that she is being held responsible if Iran ends up having a civil war. For a handful of tweets only one of which was originated by her, the rest were replies to other’s tweets and reposted tweets.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 24/02/2026 08:51

nicepotoftea · 24/02/2026 08:40

I’ll add it to the list. Was there not a thread ‘everything that JKR is responsible for?’.

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 24/02/2026 08:54

Can anyone explain

... manufacturing public consent to their country becoming an economic basket case.....

Because that one's definitely got me stumped.

Chersfrozenface · 24/02/2026 08:56

Re Iran. An accurate and succinct precis of the viewpoint of Aisha and their cohort runs thus:

The Iranian theocratic regime is hostile to Israel, therefore a paragon of virtue in the eyes of adherents to the Omnicause, and so anyone who criticises the Iranian regime is an evil fascist.

thirdfiddle · 24/02/2026 08:58

I'd also be very very wary of reposting anything from Gaza. The situation is incredibly complex and both sides are actively trying to fight a global propaganda war. I'd just about trust a BBC fact-checker, and they don't need JKR to amplify their voices.

TheKeatingFive · 24/02/2026 08:59

So, just to be clear, @Aisha176 thinks that women in Iran shouldn't protest their treatment because a) the men are too powerful and b) it's bad for the economy. Is that it?

Yep.

That is what is effectively being said.

She isn’t doing what some righteous people want, so they are calling her evil and wanting her to STFU.

I expect that the answer will be that the women can protest all they want and risk being executed, that is their choice.

Any woman discussing that issue outside of Iran is ripe for the demonising and can only be considered a tool of western imperialism and fascism and white supremacy and must be far right.

Edited

But it’s such a job to know who is ‘far right’, when left wing and right wing misogyny are so similar.

Indeed it is and getting harder all the time.

Beowulfa · 24/02/2026 09:11

I've never heard of this writer, nor the TV series. I've also missed evil Bond villain JK Rowling having a direct line to Starmer and being a global player in Middle Eastern politics. Anything else I need to brush up on?

I think that someone thought it sounded really good in their head. I believe ‘Manufacturing consent’ is a book written by Noam Chomsky about media being a propaganda machine. Which sounds like ‘informing the masses is a bad idea’ and ‘people are stupid and cannot make judgements on facts, even if those facts come from biased sources’ in many ways.

I thought it was Justine who was put in charge to sort out the Middle East.

Yes - also that JKR is weaponising women's rights just like the far right do.

Weaponising women's rights by setting up VAWG support facilities, supporting women in Iran and Afghanistan, pouring money which she herself has earnt into projects that support women, funding legal cases that support women. Etc.

Exactly like the far right do...
