Radio 4 at 11am today: The Body Politic - Surrogacy

Since it's the BBC I'd normally not have high hopes. However:

The politics of the human body is at the centre of intense debate in the UK and beyond. Thanks to science, technology and a fast-moving political landscape, humans are increasingly able to intervene in the natural processes of life – how we are conceived, how we are born and how and when we die. But what are the limits to this intervention, how should we decide and who should decide?

Broadcaster and columnist Sonia Sodha gets behind divides and polarisation to discover nuance, complexity and compelling stories, often involving a fascinating clash of competing rights and interests.

If it's Sonia Sodha it will tackle the issues rather than cheerlead for surrogacy.

Exactly the reason why I think it might be worth a listen.

I like Sonia Sodha, and she's been given leeway by The Observer for her GC opinion pieces, which is staggering really.
I doubt she'll be pulling any punches.

That was well done by Sonia Sodha. She went for the role of questioning both sides but there were some questions, and some answers, that showed that she has significant reservations about surrogacy.

For me the most striking contribution was the senior Irish barrister and politician who bought a child born in India. Having done her due diligence, she satisfied herself that there was no motivation on the part of the no-doubt-impoverished-birth-mother-to-be-paid-an-enormous-amount-of money to be concerned about. She was only able to communicate with the birth mother via a translator, which I'd assume was provided by the surrogacy service.

Ahh, it seems the programme is a repeat from last year. Hadn't lost any of its relevance though.

I’ll have to have a listen on catch up.

Sonia Sohda is very good. I remember her wearing dinosaur jewellery on a tv panel show after David Lammy called us rights-hoarding dinosaurs.

In fact there was a thread at the time: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5251291-new-radio-4-prog-with-sonia-sodha-the-body-politic
