If you don’t fancy giving them the clicks…

I’d love to know what the 220 'abusive and awful' online comments were. Probably people pointing out, entirely reasonably, that transwomen are men and therefore can’t be in a women-only organisation unless it ceases to be women-only and all other men are allowed to join too.

But, y'know, 'abusive and awful' 🤷‍♀️

nOlives · 14/02/2026 14:17

WI welcomes all women and no men, is how it should be.

Rightsraptor · 14/02/2026 19:41

I keep trying make 'Carnage at the WI' fit to the tune of Sophie Ellis-Bextor's 'Murder on the Dance Floor'. Not really working though. Sad times.

So at least 12 groups are closing 😮

But with 6,300 branches will that even be noticed...

Fire in the disco! Carnage in the...women's institute

I so want the laugh emoji!

One of those mentioned is really local to me. It’s terf central - I’m sure there’ll be another set up. The king is dead and all that…

loislovesstewie · 15/02/2026 06:48

I read that first thing. How absolutely appalling that the poor men can't infiltrate a women's organization. I always notice that the Guardian won't allow comments on some pieces, so anything to do with trans, or any piece by Owen Jones don't have the option of the reader expressing an opinion on line. Hopefully some brave soul will actually compose a letter to the Guardian advising why so many want an organization for women to be for women.

ZenNudist · 15/02/2026 07:39

I've just found out from that article that there is (was) a WI in my area and i also learned one of my neighbours is involved. Obviously not made an impression. Have never had any fetes or women's speaking groups that I know of.

hholiday · 15/02/2026 07:53

Why are transgender men more alarming than trans women? That makes so sense. Transgender women are alarming to women because they’re men.

AnSolas · 15/02/2026 08:23

Sophie Hossack, president of Ladies of the Lock WI in Kentish Town, London, said the venue they have used for nearly a decade has refused future bookings because of the policy.
“They said they did not feel comfortable renting their room to us because they are a trans-inclusive space,” she said.

Sophie has just suffered discrimination because the venue staff thinks she and all the other women must have a proper male escort.👀😬🚩

Sophie went with
Oh my goodness thank you for reminding me we must disband immediately

Not
We are suing so thanks for funding our group for the next while.

Jules Mortimore of Wells Angels, a 125-member WI group in Tunbridge Wells that also plans to close, pointed out the ruling means transgender men could join WI groups.
“That is likely to be far more confronting and alarming for women than a trans woman,” she said.

Jules must have read some of the SM around the ruling but did not understand it at all but opted for YeeOldie tranphobia anyway 🙄😂

Jules went with
Oh I can never tell!! Female? Male? How could I know? Anyway I think TIFs in community social groups are confronting and alarming.

I think it does. You've just got to sing quicker, I've just been practicing in the shower.

I went to the inaugural meeting of Ladies of the Lock. I had high hopes but, when the “activity” turned out to be sewing bunting pieces for future use at events, I decided it was not for me. I don’t do sewing and I don’t want to learn just because I’ve got a vagina. I was one of only two there who couldn’t/wouldn’t do it. Maybe I was being petty but I was silently outraged and NOT empowered! Mind you, I didn’t spot any men there that night, we could have bonded over not knowing how to be ladies… not

Alpacajigsaw · 15/02/2026 09:50

Why are they so desperate to suck up to men?

Sewing bunting is one of the things I'd expect to be a core activity at the WI! I'd be disappointed if it wasn't on the program 😄

Do you think trans men will be allowed to join the masons? (Maybe they can anyway- I haven’t checked but they used to be very old school)

I think their policy was that if a person joined as a biological male then became trans he could remain in the masons, but I don't think that females who became trans were welcome. I might be wrong as this is from something I read ages ago.
