What does anyone think about this? I just find it hard to believe anything from the GLP.

Have they included the figures for non-"trans-child" for comparison? Mental health problems in children have increased across the board. Have suicides in trans-identifying children increased disproportionately?

singthing · 13/02/2026 17:33

I think they are cruel and ghoulish, and will eat up and spit out anyone who can be of use to them, with not a jot of care about what it does to the person.

deadpan · 13/02/2026 17:37

They could be confusing correlation with causation. The numbers of "trans kids" will.have greatly increased during that time, ergo the amount of suicides by children identifying into any of the many trans identities could have increased as well.
This isn't causation Jolyon, however sad it is - and it is when any child can't see any other way out. Also, 2020-2021 didn't see a dramatic decrease of "healthcare". The tavistock closed in 2024, so what reduction of care is he on about.
Are people really this thick that they don't look into it themselves. Rhetorical question.

Still COVID. Just saying.

Or more significantly immediately after a period where there had been no mental health provision nor school pastoral support. The only thing there was, was online forums...

AccordingToWhom · 13/02/2026 17:53

They believe it was 'inadequate'. 🙄

If you look at the data linked it's not as conclusive as Good Law Project want us to believe.

Over 5 years between 2019 and 2025, there were 647 self inflicted deaths of 0-17 year olds

Of those 46 identified as trans

There were also 61 who weren't trans but identified as LBG or Q.

There were 6 deaths where gender dysphoria was recorded as a factor that may have contributed to vulnerability, ill health or death.

I wanted to have a look at the data from the source referenced by GLP:

This new data was released via a freedom of information request made to the NHS-funded National Child Mortality Database (NCMD).

When I searched for the term 'transgender' on NCMD website, I got -

Has anyone else managed to see the NCMD data first-hand?

Does Joylon have a scoobie doo clue about the pressure on mental health services atm? I would imagine suicide rates for people in general have increased because of inadequate access to health care...and that will include the tiny minority who identify as trans.

Welcome to the NHS 2026.

MarieDeGournay · 13/02/2026 19:55

The very term 'trans kids' is vague, which is one of the reasons why I was looking on the NMND database, to see their definitions.

onlytherain · 13/02/2026 21:03

Transgender children do not have higher suicide rates than other children when comorbidities are taken into account:

Ruuska, S.–M. et al. (2024): All-cause and suicide mortalities among adolescents and young adults who contacted specialised gender identity services in Finland in 1996–2019: a register study — published in BMJ Mental Health.

Autism increases suicide risk, depression does, and so on. Actually, people with more than 7 Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have the highest suicide rates, yet somehow nobody speaks about that.

AFAIK they publish occasional reports, not annually. Presumably this data has not yet been published and there might be potential issues in making the datasets themselves open to the public. You could probably FOI to find out the definition though, or email them.

ditalini · 15/02/2026 17:04

The NSPCC website has a database of serious case reviews which a child suicide always is.

They tag case reviews when gender identity is mentioned but if you read the reviews it's often extremely tangential and in no way means that it was a causal/contributing factor.

Ultimately, since there's no agreed definition of a "trans child", any statistics are suspect.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 15/02/2026 17:09

That’s really important information, thanks @ditalini

Thelnebriati · 15/02/2026 17:16

Children have little power or agency over their lives; it doesn't surprise me that those who express a desire to escape need support. Lacking agency they need real support, not one that carries a high risk of disappointment.
