Gender critical councillor challenges Cornwall Council over trans comment complaints

A gender critical councillor, Dulcie Tudor, is challenging Cornwall Council's decision to progress ten complaints against her as "discriminatory and potentially harassing".

The council has hired an outside barrister at taxpayers' expense on the matter after it received ten complaints about her comments. She has branded it 'shameful, discriminatory and potentially harassing'.

The complaints that she breached the council's code of conduct stem from a full Cornwall Council meeting in November - and subsequent comments made on social media by Cllr Tudor - when she asked the council's Liberal Democrat leader Cllr Leigh Frost if a trans woman is a woman.

... An external advisor, believed to be a barrister – paid for by the council – found that “in so far as some members of the public might find the post discriminatory, disrespectful or offensive, the statements it contains represent a legitimate expression of a political opinion based on honestly held views that are grounded in fact and law”.

The investigation found that Cllr Tudor’s comments were protected by Article 10(1) of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and that the posts “do not constitute direct or indirect discrimination against trans individuals”. ...

Thanks for the update

"....that are grounded in fact and law”. can't say fairer than that, I hope the perpetually offend who made the complaints got sent a copy of the this.

See dingbats, you're not the only people who are allowed to have an opinion.

It is stated that by calling trans men ‘men pretending to be women’ and drawing an equivalent with violent criminals the subject member has breached the code.

That first bit makes no sense. Calling trans men, men…??? - seems like someone has got totally confused, easily done with all the mangling of language.

SlackJawedDisbeliefXY · 03/03/2026 23:42

Many of the complainants raised similar points that, in their view, referencing murdered trans women and referring to them as “men pretending to be women” was discriminatory language and “grossly offensive”.

Nothing to see here ... and definitely not an orchestrated campaign

Jesus wept, what a farce.

With the dangerous state of many of the roads around here, I am so pleased that my council tax has been used for this rather than fixing potholes...

I'm surprised there were only ten complaints. The tra pile ons aren't what they used to be. What's the betting at least one was from a disgraced former copper?

" a legitimate expression of a political opinion based on honestly held views that are grounded in fact and law”.
A bit long for a T-shirt, shame..

That's kind of a mic-drop statement, isn't it?
The perfect response to 'your words are literal transphobic genocide', or that stating that you do not believe that TWAW is in and of itself 'hate speech'.

Woman - grounded in fact and law!

Agree - but why is it that other councils seem to be able to not hear about a legally signifigant moment like this, and carry on as though Stonewall law is still the ruling guidelines for the UK?!

Perhaps we ought to send the article to our own Councilors, to the Council Leaders & to the Heads of Council legal depts.
Thompsons & Leigh Day too, if only for the lulz.

That's an idea. I was thinking that there should maybe be a thread on FWR where we just post links to information like this so that its easy to find when needed.

As yet, although my Labour Council is totally TWAW there has been no public evidence of anti GC actions.

I bet they'd love it in Bristol.

My Council too & I am all out of patience with them.

In the same way many NHS trusts aren’t getting the message, I think, a combination of ignorance, apathy and organised resistance.
