Ash Regan's #Unbuyable bill - today in the Scottish Parliament

It's all go today in Scotland. Link to Scottish Parliament TV here for anyone who wants to watch once it gets started. Cons and Labour will support, Lib Dems, Greens and the SNP will oppose, despite the fact that's been SNP party policy for YEARS. I am hoping against hope that more SNP MSPs will rebel than the three who have already indicated.

Patrick Harvey (boo, hiss) now filibustering because (I think) Meghan Gallegher has withdrawn her own private members bill to try to free up some time for Ash’s to be debated.

#unbuyable debate starting shortly.

Thanks for sharing. Honestly I'm past despairing but it really does show you who these politicians are. So glad to see Labour supporting at least. Those opposed should be utterly ashamed of themselves.

SwirlyGates · 03/02/2026 15:58

Well the SNP and Greens no doubt hate her for standing up to their gender bollocks, so they will vote against her whatever.

OhBuggerandArse · 03/02/2026 16:05

Ash spoke well, but was understandably frustrated by the lack of time and the mind boggling bollocks that has been thrown in her way. Now the committee chair is doing mealy-mouthed technocratic witter about why they couldn't possibly do anything about anything ever because it's all so contested and difficult. I can't believe how bloody awful they are.

OP posts:
guinnessguzzler · 03/02/2026 16:11

Yep. And that the Greens and the SNP have the gall to continue to try to claim themselves as theeee most progressive parties ever just pisses me right off. You hate women and you think it's ok for men to pay to rape them, just own it you bunch of massive misogynists.

OhBuggerandArse · 03/02/2026 17:18

Wind back and listen to Michelle Thomson, and to Ruth Maguire. They spoke wonderfully.

Fergus Ewing now suggesting that the Scottish Government set up Police Scotland to feed in unlikely cost figures for the cost of implementing the bill just before the deadline. Ash Regan can be heard off-mic agreeing with him that it was 'remarkably coincidental'.

Thanks, OP. I missed this thread and made another.

Regan was brave and principled. A real conviction politician.

And it was good to see a few SNP MSPs defy the whip.

Edited

Fucksake. The whole thing was set up, it seems.

100%.

I don't know if they even twig how absolutely grim and abhorrent their support for prostitution comes across.

We're going to start needing two hands to count the number of failed attempts to pass the Nordic Model in Scotland. There was the late MSP Trish Godman in 2010 who first tried to sneak it onto the end of an unrelated bill hoping no one would notice- people did notice so she then tried a member bill, then MSP Rhoda Grant tried a member bill in 2015, the Scottish Gov had a big public consultation in 2020 or so- the results weren't very supportive so it was quietly ignored, then MSP Ash Regan. A few weeks back Spain fought off a third attempt to pass the Nordic Model there.

Ash Regan did not support a Green member bill to ban cruel Greyhound racing which was recently voted on at Scottish Parliament and passed stage 1.

RhannionKPSS · 04/02/2026 08:22

The irony is there is no greyhound racing in Scotland anymore…

RhannionKPSS · 04/02/2026 08:24

There is prostitution though, trafficking, drugs and saunas aka brothels

Greyhound racing in Scotland has been on the decline for decades, but one active track remains. I don't see any harm in supporting this bill to ensure this is eradicated in Scotland completely and to stop anyone getting ideas about trying to give it a comeback.

"If passed, the Greyhound Racing (Offences) (Scotland) Bill will ban greyhound racing, effectively shuttering the only remaining track in Scotland at Thornton in Fife, where there has been sporadic racing taking place in recent years."

Wow, that's a new tactic from Chris - "nevermind trafficked women, let's think about greyhounds."

In the run up to the stage 1 vote I've made a number of posts with sources backing up my views on AR's bill.

Yes I think I will support a ban on greyhound racing. I am thinking about what happens to them when they are too old to race and the potential to abuse them with performance drugs.

Jfc. What about women? You don't think trafficked, abused women who are continually raped for money deserve a bill in parliament that criminalises those who buy their bodies, thus ending their cycle of abuse? Criminalising the people buying sex will end their pain and apparently that's not important to you whatsoever? Tell me you're a man without telling me you're a man. We really are just sub humans to you aren't we? So dogs get more empathy from you than your fellow humans. Who, btw you wouldn't exist on this earth if it wasn't for; it was your mother, a woman, who birthed you.

PaterPower · 05/02/2026 14:27

There are a few similarities between the cruelties of greyhound racing and the TR lobby’s fascination with interfering with prepubescent children’s development.

Swap ‘performance enhancing’ with ‘puberty blocking’ drugs (that will cause them long term physical issues and the retardation of brain development) and you’re not far off.

Celebrate and use them whilst they’re physically active and on-message, and discard them when the unrelenting pain creeps in and they have regrets try to detransition.

At least the older greyhounds have charities that will re-home and look after them in old age. The detransitioners just get cut off and abused online.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/02/2026 14:32

The greyhounds are a complete distraction from the usual suspects. You can both ban greyhound racing and criminalise the buying of sexual services, both being exploitation. They are not mutually exclusive.

Chris pops up on all of the threads that discuss the dangers and damages of prostitution to let us know that letting men have a class of women that they can pay to rape is a great idea and that we shouldn’t do anything to try and stop it because that would be prudish. There’s mention of empowerment and all that bollocks, as well as attempts to paint the Nordic model as wholly impractical and ineffective.

It seems very important to Chris that there should always be women who are available for the use of men and that they, and we, shouldn’t object or complain about it because that upsets the way Chris wants to view the world and women.
