There's a right-wing account on X called Millennial Woes. I don't think Millennial and I agree about very much but about a year ago he posted this tweet:
"It's amazing how much leftist discourse is just them pretending not to understand things, thus making discourse impossible."
The truth of this hit me instantly, and of course, you see it nowhere more than in the trans debate, and particularly on this board. onepostwonder's post is the perfect illustration. He (I assume it's a he) knows perfectly well that our discussion is about the harm caused to children by cross-sex hormones and surgery and our understanding that this is in the service of the sexual appetites of adult men. But his comment pretends not to understand it, to pretend that the point we are making is something different entirely.
Once you've noticed it once, you see it everywhere - but most commonly, as in the current thread about the Australian prison, in the pretence that when we object to men in women's spaces, we are objecting to a particular kind of woman ("trans women"), and that when we object to men like Imane Khelif fighting against women, we are objecting to them because they are insufficiently feminine.
It's so utterly, pointlessly exhausting, having to argue against these bad faith takes all the time because the people making them are incapable of arguing honestly.
