The Bluestocking Women’s Pub: definitely full of ludicrous halfwits who refuse to get a grip (with unionised gerbils)

Welcome to The Bluestocking: convivial by design, opinionated in the best way, generously stocked with excellent food and drink that complies with whatever it’s meant to comply with, and any calories, gluten or alcohol are entirely virtual.

Staffed by impeccably trained, unfailingly polite gerbils who run a tight bar with plenty of enthusiasm and good intentions. Quick with the drinks, but terrible spillers spellers and liable to turn an idle thought on existential existence into a full blown musical with Busby Berkeley routines. You have been warned.

All women welcome, just in case that isn't obvious. Men can go to The Staunch Ally round the corner.

It’s the same in parts of the U.K. A local nature reserve used to have loads, there has been a massive effort to get rid of most of them. Back when we were postgrads DH did some volunteering with the uni Conservation Soc. and participated in rhododendron clearances. I think they’re one of those species which inhibit growth of other plants under them, and then there’s this…

I had no idea rhododendrons were so dodgy.

I suppose it fits in with their having such an ominous sounding name though. If you didn’t know what a rhododendron was then it doesn’t sound like something you’d want to bump into on a dark night.

'When Rhododendrons Roamed The Earth' - Soon To Be A Major Motion Picture. Be Afraid. Be Very Afraid'😱

'When Rhododendrons Roamed The Earth' - Soon To Be A Major Motion Picture. Be Afraid. Be Very Afraid'😱

Spoiler alert:
🎥The Earth is saved from the Roaming Rhododendrons by a Wisewoman who wears a cloak of magpie feathers - she realises that Rhodos are calcifuges, and organises Her People to replace the soil around their settlement with calcareous soil. The Rhodos flee in disarray.
The Magpie Woman is revered as the hero and saviour of Her People.

Quite right too! 😂

Rhododendrons are a scourge in parts of Ireland, a damaging invasive species.
Mind you, fuchsia and montbretia are unvetted immigrants too, but they have become completely naturalisedSmile
The rhodos form 'an impenetrable understorey' [😏] which changes the soil composition and destroys the growth of native species. There are programmes to clear them out of native woodland, but the rhodos have a headstart...

They are a big problem in mid and north Wales too, where the acid soil suits them just fine.

Who would you like to play you in the film, Magpie?

Ooh, gosh. That's difficult!
I'd want someone who can be as kick-ass as Sigourney Weaver, but who looks a bit more like me. Tallish, dark hair, curves, but can do gravitas - any thoughts?

Aha! I asked Gemini.
Eva Green. Definitely.

I had to google her
IMDb Supercuts - Eva Green: Movie and TV Moments | IMDb
I'm impressedSmile

I think she'd have to bulk up a bit to be curvy and kick-ass enough, but I'm sure she'd happily do that to win the coveted role of Magpie Woman.
She might also have to take a crash course in soil science😁

I'm assuming they'd have me on a hefty retainer as their scientific consultant, which solves that problem!
I must admit, I'm a closet goth. Not all the time, because I like wearing colour too, but occasionally the goth urges take over.

Nigella Lawson?

ifIwerenotanandroid · 31/01/2026 14:21

Nigella Lawson?

Good call. Not sure she's commanding enough to be a wise woman?

MarieDeGournay · 31/01/2026 14:35

ifIwerenotanandroid · 31/01/2026 14:21

Nigella Lawson?

What a coincidence - I was just thinking 'Nigella Lawson', but I decided it was best to keep my thoughts about Nigella to myself😏
She's going to be too busy doing Bake Off to play Magpie, alas.

I'm not sure what I think about her doing Bake Off. It may be too much of a good thing. And I doubt if she'll get the chance to display one of her most attractive features [to me,anyway] - her ability to quote people like Dryden while cooking😍
Maybe the film can star 'Magpie as Herself' [don't worry, Magpie, you can be highly-paid scientific consultant as well] - here's your costume:

Well, I hope you're all proud of yourselves. I've just bought yarn cause I liked the colours. I cannot knit nor crochet, but the conversation on here has inspired me to try to learn. Again. I knew this place was a den of iniquity and bad influences.

Ooh, that’s pretty.
I used to be able to knit and intend to start again at some point now I’m retired.

Same.

I used to be reasonably competent but haven't knitted for years. I can remember how to cast on with pins, but my brain has blanked on thumb casting on and also the specifics of casting off.

I had a Patons book of knitting techniques and specific stitch patterns, but Lord knows what I've done with it.

My tension was alway too tight...

Heh heh heh. Another one bites the dust. Another one caught in the web of needlework spun by the Bluestockingers😄
Are you going for knitting or crocheting? I can't do the former very well and the latter not at all, so you will quickly outclass me at either.

Good luck Rum, looking forward to seeing your handiwork in the near futureSmile

FuzzyPuffling · 31/01/2026 15:01

As we know, I do sewing not knitting, but not wanting to be left out, I've ordered several lengths of cotton and silk fabric from India. I'm looking forward to some new clothes!

Magpiecomplex · 31/01/2026 15:09

Gemini is clearly feeling puritanical today. Doesn't look much like a den of iniquity to me. (I know it's spelt wrong 🤦🏻‍♀️)

The best dens are always the innocent looking ones.

Not sure whether to try knitting or crocheting. I used to be able to crochet, when I was young, but I struggled to get started again a few months ago. However my step mum knits so if I get stuck with that she could help me.

@FuzzyPuffling That sounds like a fantastic purchase. My yarn wasn't from anywhere near as exotic, just Newport Road in Cardiff 😁

I used to live in Roath, very close to Newport Rd!

RumNotRun · 31/01/2026 15:46

I live in Splott @FuzzyPuffling, not quite as nice as Roath but we have the famous Splott Beach (famous in that it's on Google Maps, but it's never going to win any awards!

FuzzyPuffling · 31/01/2026 15:56

I lived on Stacey Road, which is the Splott side of Roath, rather than the Posh Bit By The Park!
I was at the Art College when it was on Howard Gardens.
