The Bluestocking Women’s Pub: definitely full of ludicrous halfwits who refuse to get a grip (with unionised gerbils)

Welcome to The Bluestocking: convivial by design, opinionated in the best way, generously stocked with excellent food and drink that complies with whatever it’s meant to comply with, and any calories, gluten or alcohol are entirely virtual.

Staffed by impeccably trained, unfailingly polite gerbils who run a tight bar with plenty of enthusiasm and good intentions. Quick with the drinks, but terrible spillers spellers and liable to turn an idle thought on existential existence into a full blown musical with Busby Berkeley routines. You have been warned.

All women welcome, just in case that isn't obvious. Men can go to The Staunch Ally round the corner.

@ifIwerenotanandroid the Omaze draw result is announced tomorrow… that would let me buy my French chateau to run as a writers and artist retreat. And spaniel colony.

@AuntieMsDamsonCrumble Colonel Sir William Howe De Lancey is a fantastic name! I aspire to retire as Professor Dame Magpiecomplex.

Are you title hoarding?

You are already Admiral Viscountess Magpiecomplex

Just caught up with the thread. Today was mostly taken up with our neighbour’s funeral. Her poor DH looks to have aged years in the last month.Sad

It was the first RC service of any type I’d ever been to. The hymns and readings were all totally familiar from my nonconformist youth, but some of the bits in between were a bit different - not much tbh.

Good luck! EMs is £106million tomorrow, so I'm just off to buy a ticket. Mind you, the place I've got my eye on is POA, so will even that be enough? It's... spacious. Or maybe I'll go for the £15million property with cloisters. Mmm, cloisters. I really want my own cloisters.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 29/01/2026 19:18

💙To all dealing with losses at the moment.

I love it! Looking extremely distinguished there.

I'm sure the Bluestocking has cloisters.

That was a sad day for you, ErrolFlowers
'Time was' when the RC funeral service would have been very foreign indeed to you, some would say that a lot was lost when Catholic ceremonies were simplified and performed in the vernacular instead of Latin. The old ceremonies had a healing quality that didn't depend so much on words, they went straight to the heart.

I'm sure the Bluestocking has cloisters.

I'm sure it has, but imagine having these to walk in everyday IRL.

It doesn't have to be these cloisters; it's just that, unaccountably, so few houses have cloisters, so given £106m I'll be grabbing these with both hands. It also comes with a nice 12th C church.

Another interesting woman is Flora Sandes, who served as a soldier in the Serbian army in the First World War

Apparently she appears in Elisabeth Shipton's 2014) book Female Tommies: the frontline women of the First World War, published by The History Press. ISBN 9780752491431. The title is intriguing - I haven't read it, though I may have to do so now.

Nice.
The trend for adding conservatories seems to be over, maybe cloisters could be the next thing?

I'm feeling a redesign of my dream house coming on. I could fit some cloisters in quite easily, I think.

Those are glorious cloisters and as for the C12th church... 😍I'm guessing the rest of the building is in keeping with them? I have cloister envy...

Should we pool our resources and buy it for a holiday home?

I’m putting in a request for the second week in May. That should be about £2 million. Perhaps I could sell my knitting as museum-quality modern art to raise the money.

Britinme · 29/01/2026 20:56

I thought I'd posted in the quilt discussion but I guess I must have not done it properly. I'm too sloppy for patchwork quilting, but I made a very cute Siddi quilt - a technique used by Ugandan Asians - for my goddaughter's baby. It's a totally different technique and can be seen here, along with the cute baby it was intended for.

WTF indeed, Maggers!
I'm not convinced that sourdough and fudge could ever work together.

EdithStourton · 29/01/2026 21:17

NB Cloisters, while very beautiful, are terribly draughty - though the ones in the images above appear to have been glazed by someone sick of the English weather and what it does in January - well, most of the year, really.

I did, as a student, briefly live off a set of cloisters, hence my expertise on their degree of draughtiness.

Forgive me but I have a woohoo to utter - a box of my book of poems arrived with me today. It's a thing of beauty and I have to keep stroking it to make sure it's real! We are heading down to Connecticut tomorrow for the weekend, as I'm taking part in a poetry reading there, so I'm glad to have some books to take with me with the vague hope of selling a couple.

This would go nicely with the fudge flavoured cheese I was persuaded to try before Christmas i.e go straight in the bin!

At least two ingredients too many!
