Absolutely horrifying.

I'm 100% sure another woman did not put that camera in that place.

Interestingly, the article doesn't mention if the cubicle was ladies only, or unisex.

Stay vigilant everyone.

"I'm trying to get people to think when they go in public situations, look everywhere, even in places that we wouldn't even think would be unsafe," she said.

"When I've spoken to people about it, it's not something that anybody's ever thought about, nobody looks at under the toilet seats or has a little scan before they use the toilet.

My gym had workmen in late last year and had to swap the men and women’s changing rooms over for a week during the building work. It was an ideal opportunity to place spy cameras. It saddens me this was on my mind. I’ve been checking around me before I change or shower since but the cameras are so small it would be easy to miss one.

RNApolymerase · 25/01/2026 08:44

I just saw that. It isn't clear what type of toilet it was but two things I think are probably true are 1) it was a man who put it there and 2) there is more opportunity for him to do so in a unisex cubicle than a single sex ladies loo.

WearyLady · 25/01/2026 09:41

I think this must have been labelled as a women’s toilet rather than being unisex because men usually raise the seat and this camera would have been spotted earlier. Or perhaps just used for a spot of target practise.

Tpu · 25/01/2026 09:44

It can’t have been there very long, because cleaners usually leave the seat raised.
it is obvious what it is.

Fingerprint the staff. Some people are so gross. 🤮

Rightsraptor · 25/01/2026 10:27

I don't know about you, but I really don't want to have to lift the seat in a public toilet before using it. So unhygienic, never mind why the fuck should I have to?

Yes, that's my first thought. Who else would have the opportunity to set it up and collect the data from it?

Yes, we sent one man to the moon why can't we send them all there. 😂

As we used to say back in the day when we were allowed to make such quips, but not say nowadays because we're so much more highly evolved and progressive. (Sorry MN mods, don't delete me).

Greyskybluesky · 25/01/2026 11:17

It's such a violation. And as the woman says, this experience will stay with her for the rest of her life.

I'm just waiting for the predictable TRA response of "see, men are going to do it anyway"

Ohcrap082024 · 25/01/2026 11:19

I’ve just read this article and it is absolutely sickening. I agree that it can’t have been there long. But even
if it had been just an hour, in a busy restaurant, that’s a lot of women having had their privacy violated. Absolutely disgusting.

And yes, I am want to know if this was a cubicle in a women’s only toilet area. Or a mixed sex toilet.

Is anyone familiar with this particular Giggling Squid in Leceister?

Chariothorses · 25/01/2026 11:43

The number of voyeurism offences against women is scary, and as the recent WRN 'leisure centre' report showed
https://www.womensrights.network/post/how-leisure-centres-enable-sexual-predators
women are at huge risk when males are allowed into spaces where we are undressed (whatever the mens gender beliefs!).

If there are any mumsnetters who use mixed sex toilets etc ( I can't- have to plan restaurants/ leisure centre etc use etc around whether they have female only spaces- total nightmare!) worth considering a hidden camera detector for peace of mind. They are £20- 50 from Amazon etc.

Leicester, (as far as i am aware) does not have gender neutral or mixed sex facilities, I have never come across any. I live not that far away and do go to this city quite often.

There are shared unisex toilets in pubs, cafes, restaurants in Leicester, also these have been installed in the main museum and newly refurbished cinema. They are seen as an answer to restricted space and also as inclusive.
I prefer female only open stalls due to hygiene concens, privacy, dignity and the fact that in the purpose built lone toilets no one would hear you scream if there was a rapist lurking.
I don’t like the thought of children using them alone in case they’re followed and attacked. The additional risk from access to install cameras means we have to be forever vigilant.
