Study Title: Young People's understandings of the UK Supreme Court ruling on the For Women Scotland v Scottish Ministers case.
What is the purpose of the study?
On 16 April 2025 the UK Supreme Court provided its ruling on the For Women Scotland v Scottish Ministers. The court concluded that the terms "man," "woman," and "sex" in the Equality Act 2010 refer to biological sex, emphasizing that the definition of "woman" is limited to biological women and does not include trans women with a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC). This study is interested in young people’s understandings and perspectives of the Supreme Court ruling and how this might affect how the police interact with trans and non-binary people.
Researchers at the University of Sunderland were approached by Northumbria Police to undertake this research. They are interested in the views of young people to help inform their review of policies in this area. The research team do not work for the police.
