The Bluestocking Boxing Day sale: 1 gerbil for the price of 2

Previous thread:

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5457910-the-bluestocking-next-stop-christmas

As the patrons, and gerbils, of The Bluestocking Pub sleep off their Christmas Day food and alcohol intake the capybaras will be getting paid double time to move the pub and contents to the new thread overnight.

All welcome, as long as you are a woman. The men have their own pub The Staunch Ally. It's just down the road, then turn left at the bridge.

You don't have to be mad to drink here but it most definitely helps.

Leave the real world behind and join us in the mayhem and surreal life of a pub staffed by gerbils. Where the food is always exactly what you ordered and the drinks don't give you a hangover the next day!

Happy New Year, Bluestocking regulars! From a casual (read: lazy) visitor.

Last night I got spooked by blue orbs floating around in the dark fields around us. Only to learn it was some nearby horses wearing 'fake sunlight' eye masks. Every day is a school day. I've stood down from writing to Danny on Uncanny.

Not going to lie that would probably have scared the crap out of me!

That's a good resolution, Cake.

This year, I intend to lose three stone and catch up on my reading, having realised quite how many half-read books I have sitting around! One of those resolutions will be considerably easier than the other, which is why I'm going on public record in the matter of how much weight I need to lose. Hopefully you lot will be able to help me stick to it!

On the weight loss front. Take photos from all angles/sides and along with weight take measurements of top of arms top of legs, bust, waist, hips, anything else you can get a tape measure round. Oh and your blood pressure if you can.

The more things you have to look at that make you go "oooh look at how much that has reduced" the more chance you have of not getting sidetracked by bad horrible foods that tempt you with their lushiness whilst secretly spreading themselves round the top of your thigh

Happy New Year to you too, Tractorrrrrrrrrrr😄
Now I think of it, Anactor could also get the Gladiators announcers version of her name - so happy new year Anactorrrrrrrrrrr!

Happy New Year!

Bit late to th BS NY party because, well frankly I was a bit late out at a NY party.

@Boiledbeetle I LOVE Rhodia stationery. I first discovered it in a hypermarché in France as a kid and thought it was so foreign and exotic. I led a sheltered life, I think. I always have a small yellow Rhodia notebook on the go, with the flip pages that peel off. Very tempted by the bundle you linked to.

It's nice to know I'm not alone. My first Rhodia notepad was either from Holland, Germany or Belgium. Exactly which is lost to time now, as we shopped in all three on the same holiday. It is my favourite stationery company.

Maybe this year I'll get rid of all the notebooks that I don't love and just leave myself with the Rhodia. And the notebook from Sainsbury's that has removable dinosaurs on the front.

All newcomers and casual poppers-in are always welcome, CraftandGlamour, but somebody who brings a story of blue orbs floating around in the darkness is specially welcome, what a vision😱

And the 'oh that's all it is!' explanation is just as weird - horses wearing fake sunlight masks???
Please call in again with more stories like that, they make gerbil bar staff and capybara maintenance teams seem almost normal😄

An item of clothing in your targeted size is a good idea too - every time you try it on, it should be a little less tight, and then one day, you can preen in front of a full-length mirror in it😄

You are of course a very handsome magpie as you are now, you always look splendid in your black and white outfit with that lovely iridescence - but you could be a healthier magpie as well as a handsome oneSmile

DeanElderberry · 01/01/2026 12:37

At least knowing about blue orbs will help the rest of us.

It reminds me of taking Teddy out for a middle-of-the night pee in late March or early April 2020. It was cold and there were stars, and then there was a line of stars, moving slowly and silently across the sky. I remember thinking maybe the alien invaders might do a better job.

Quite disappointing to learn later it was just Musk junk.

Magpiecomplex · 01/01/2026 12:43

Thanks @MarieDeGournay and @Boiledbeetle, sage advice there. Do you think reading about cheese (thus ticking off part of my other resolution) is a good substitute for eating it?

I think it's safe, but only if there is no actual cheese in the house.

Myrtle, I've been meaning to respond to a post of yours from - from last yearSmile
but you know how topics can get swept away in a Bluestocking conversation!
I wanted to say what an honour it must be to be asked to conduct the funeral of your friend, by the friend himself, because you had officiated at the funeral of his wife.

It will be probably very cold, so knitting yourself something warm is a good idea! Knit as many layers as you can between now and then!

It is a big task for you to take on, while not 100% fit, but it is something you have to do, isn't it? and I'm sure you will feel good for having fulfilled your friend's final wish. .

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 01/01/2026 12:51

Dh and I had an early night - he was snoring by midnight, but I was still reading and heard all the fireworks going off in the next street. To be honest, it was the nicest way to see in the New Year - the programmes at midnight are always a bit of a disappointment.

I have made one resolution - I’m going to read a poem every day. I thought a resolution that adds something to life would be better than giving something up.

I do want to do some decluttering too, but that’s not a resolution.

Ah... That's where the plan comes unstuck!

MarieDeGournay · 01/01/2026 12:58

I've been thinking about our little friends here in the Bluestocking, and how much we owe them.

I sing the gerbil.

They can defy the laws of physics by carrying vats of our favourite tipples to us.
They can do synchronised massages on creatures many times their size.
They have no fear in the face of felines.
They have restored the reputation of Furries.
They bring us sleep and sometimes dreams.
They are prepared to dress up in ra-ra skirts and form gerbil pyramids.
They accompany us to hospital appointments and job interviews.
They dressed in black and lined the quay to meet a galleon freighted with grief.
They go where we cannot go - into each others' hearts.

I sing the gerbil.
💙

Lovely Marie, just Lovely.

I have been watching the New Year's Day concert from Vienna and am hoping a small, enthusiastic gerbil will leap up from behind the kettle drum and whack her triangle!

Boiledbeetle · 01/01/2026 13:24

I have completed daily task No. 1 of 365! Goodbye 2 duvet sets I don't like. Goodbye 2 sheets that go with them. And goodbye to the bag I just put them in.

Plus I did actually have a shower at 8 this morning.

Currently wining at life!!

Congratulations! It's so tempting to hang on to bed linen "just in case", but realistically if you don't like them, you'll never use them.

Oh, for a Viennese Gerbil!

I tried to get Copilot to create a triangle-playing, formally-clad gerbil, but the paws just aren't right.

Lovely 😍

The gerbils are currently trying to perform it. Due to technical issues AI will currently only produce the first half for me though.

It's winter sets and whilst flannel is lovely despite being on the other side of the menopause now I'm still prone to over heating at night. I've not long moved from the 1 tog duvet to the 4.5 tog duvet and I'm finding it too much. Winter duvet cover and Winter sheet as well would finish me off! They've not been used for the last 2 winters so it's time for them to go.

That is indeed the kind of thing!

Chersfrozenface · 01/01/2026 13:59

I note that the very few female musicians in the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra wear shirts and jackets like the men, so our Viennese trianglist is correctly attired.

DeanElderberry · 01/01/2026 14:00

But if it is a female triangle-playing gerbil, as surely it should be to provide inspiration to (?)Gubbins, formal attire would be a longish black dress with a becoming neckline. Wouldn't it?

FuzzyPuffling · 01/01/2026 14:01

Oh Gubbins, how very smart you look.
Well triangled, our little furry friend!

Triangle not quite right, alas, but looking very smart!
