If we’re sharing lovely music appropriate to the season, may I offer my very favourite, among many I like? I particularly enjoy hearing it from somewhere with a good echo, to give full feeling when they sing “cold”.

A Spotless Rose, sung by a different Cambridge Chapel Choir.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 24/12/2025 13:55

Sending you much love, @Swashbuckled - I hope the drive goes well.

We have done most of the pre-Christmas day food prep - the only thing still to finish is boiling the gammon ( it’s on now) and glazing it, for dinner on Boxing Day.

MarieDeGournay · 24/12/2025 14:04

And another one, unusual because there isn't a tradition of carols in Irish.

'I sing of a night in Bethlehem A night as bright as dawn I sing of that night in Bethlehem The night the Word was born The skies are glowing gaily The earth in white is dressed See Jesus in the cradle Drink deep in His mother's breast And there on a lonely hillside The shepherds bow down in fear When the heavens open brightly And God's message rings out so clear Glory now to the Father In all the heavens high And peace to His friends on earth below'
ErrolTheDragon · 24/12/2025 15:10

By chance turned on the radio while having a break from vacuuming. at 3pm, carols from kings. I need to get it done so will try to do in bursts during the readings - I could probably recite most of those if I had to.

Mary and Joseph, important pause, and the babe lying in a manger?

Anactor · 24/12/2025 15:41

Just popped in for a large coffee and discovered @ifIwerenotanandroid has made me a lovely bauble! Thank you.

One Crib service down and a Midnight Mass to go… yes, a very large coffee, bar gerbil.

SionnachRuadh · 24/12/2025 16:45

Just popped in from a long day's travelling to wish everyone well, especially those who are poorly right now.

Large coffee with a shot of something stiffish in it please.

I've been doing one of my least favourite tasks today - tidying. It gets left until I have enough energy, so it tends to get left quite often. Still, I've reached bedrock so we're ok.
Have the gerbils opened the Christmas chocolates yet? Send a tub in my direction please.

AuntieMsDamsonCrumble · 24/12/2025 17:14

Thank you to Marie, to AWintersDay and to SionnachRuadh for the beautiful carols - all very different, but equally lovely to listen to. I may be weary of singing them at various seasonal choir performances, but it's always good to hear them sung/played by professionals.

@NotAtMyAge Great news of your DGS's new job. I hope your family enjoy the celebrations.

For anyone travelling for Christmas this year, have a safe and trouble-free journey.

For those in less than good health, or facing difficult times, I hope for a peaceful and restorative Christmas.

I shall be knee deep in turkey etc tomorrow, so to all the members (and staff) of the Bluestocking, thank you for welcoming me into your cosy little pub and a Very Happy Christmas to you and all your furry friends.

Boiledbeetle · 24/12/2025 17:29

This has to be the worst job I've ever had.

On 24 hour shifts day after day.

Only about another week to go though.

Moneys good admittedly.

Yesterday I was still feeling fairly miserable, house a total mess, no decorations except the lights I didn't take down last year. Today the wind has changed direction and the air is cold and dry, and I realise just how much of the breathing problems were down to the damp.

The house is still messy, but there's a clear trail through it, the crib is up, less elaborate than usual, but okay. I have a big bunch of holly and ivy in a large vase, adorned with small decorations and more lights. I even found some holly berries that the scoundrelly blackbird missed.

I listened to the Nine Lessons and Carols from Christ Church cathedral (and chuckled slightly at one totally OTT C of I accent) - Thine be the Glory at the end of that is the signal to put the candle in the window.

I've had a shower, which other people who will be in church later should be grateful for, made bread sauce, and done the lower layers of the trifle (I'll be using a tub of posh custard for the middle layer. And lit a fire.

Smoked fish and salad later, and a mince pie and some sort of alcohol when I'm back from Mass (long before midnight).

Maybe I'll put the tree up tomorrow - there will still the the remaining twelve days to enjoy it.

A Blessed Christmas to all.

Very creditable, but you need to put a bit more effort into TWINKLING.

EdithStourton · 24/12/2025 17:59

The (adult) DC are gathered with us, and we have been eating cheese and chocolate. Some of us went for a bracing walk before lunch.

I've got a cold, so I'm looking forward to a few days of not having to do very much (DH is cooking tomorrow; I'll be setting the table and shoving things I cooked and froze into the microwave; DC can take over the tidying up).

We've had a fairly tough year as a family, so it's good to just be able to wind down together, watch films, play board games.

Wishing everyone a happy Christmas, though I know that for some it's going to be a difficult day, or at the very least a day with some difficult interludes. I know we'll be thinking of each other at various times.

I'll leave you with one of my Christmas favourites. I've heard this lot in concert twice, and they are utterly amazing.

I think she's got it . . . .

MarieDeGournay · 24/12/2025 18:11

Deano, that sounds like one of those films on telly around Christmas, where nothing is going right, but then, by some miracle [or antibiotics/change in wind direction/etc] things come good just in time for the 25th and A Jolly Time Is Had By AllSmile🎄I'm glad it turning out similar for you, and hope you have a lovely Christmas.

That is a beautiful piece of music, Edith, what a nice range of music we are enjoying, including Sionnach's.Smile

Boily - good jaaaab! great twinkling!✨ I knew you had it in youGrin

Extra good wishes to everyone who needs extra good wishes tonight, for whatever reason💙

Chersfrozenface · 24/12/2025 18:44

Adult daughter and unattached brother are here and after some frantic flinging of things they have somewhere to sleep. Shopping is done, inroads are being made into the booze. Next up, the Muppets' Christmas Carol.

A happy Christmas, everyone, and hugs to all who could do with one.

RandomHypatia · 24/12/2025 18:55

About to attempt to put child to bed. He woke up a lot feeling very excited last night. I had less than 4 hours sleep. I expect tonight to be worse. I enjoy his joy and excitement, but would enjoy it more if he'd sodding sleep.
Boiled looks lovely on the tree, much nicer than our crooked angel (i think our angel's face is really creepy so avoid looking at her).
Hopefully everyone finds time to relax tomorrow. Have a good day all. X

ShinyBlueTractor · 24/12/2025 19:11

Happy Xmas Eve.

Almost everything wrapped, we've watched a festive movie, and all seems fairly mellow here.

So I think it's time.... I'd like a very big fancy golden goblet of mulled wine, please, bar gerbils! Make sure there's some random fruit in there, if you don't mind, thanking you!

And sending love to all who are finding the season a challenge. Please have some low key sparkliness, a clink of our festive glasses, and just a wee moment to acknowledge it together.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 24/12/2025 19:18

I have just watched Carols from Kings, and am feeling a bit more festive - but also rather tired.

Boiledbeetle · 24/12/2025 19:31

OK no job is worth having a Christmas tree shoved up your backside.

I've paid Giblets to stand in for me.

Hahaha!

Yes, that looks warming, fruity and delicious @Magpiecomplex 👌and I see I have the perfect attachment with which to lift my golden goblet!

I'm feeling well fancy now <preens>
