Teacher killed and 25 girls abducted in gunbattle at Nigerian school

Armed men have killed a teacher and abducted at least 25 students in an attack on a girls' secondary school in north-western Nigeria, police say.

The gang invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, at around 04:00 local time (0300 GMT) on Monday, they said.

The attackers "engaged police personnel on duty in a gun duel" before scaling the perimeter fence and seizing the students from their hostel, a statement said.

One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now receiving treatment.
Eyewitnesses described a large group of attackers, known locally as bandits, who arrived firing sporadically to cause panic.

Residents told the BBC that the gunmen subsequently marched a number of girls into nearby bushland.

The police said they had deployed "additional police tactical units, alongside military personnel and vigilante groups" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is underway in surrounding forests and suspected escape routes.

Its just over 11 years that the Chibok school girls were kidnapped.

Oh god. I saw your thread title and so hoped you weren't talking about a new incident.

Those poor girls. And the staff who tried to protect them.

It’s awful. Targetting young girls in schools – making them fearful of getting an education. And the authorities seem so powerless to act.

This is just awful, I have no words.

And 11 years since Chibok? It's just horrendous. And school kidnappings happen so often there.

I have no words. The evil of these men is beyond my ken.

This is the horrific mindset of men who see women as things, as a resource they can use and abuse.

My heart breaks for those poor girls - all they wanted was to pursue an education.

Those poor girls, absolutely heartbreaking.

And this is just about crime. No pretence of some sort of politics.

And not forgetting that those few girls from Chibok who did return then faced isolation and negativity. And the children they had been forced to have.

Oh my God those poor girls.

Another 20 girls taken in Kebbi state. The authorities there have now ordered that all secondary schools and colleges close.

This is just horrendous. I can't fathom how evil these men must be. I don't know of anything we (ordinary people in Britain or similar) can do to help.
