Another data scrape. I'd say it's also defamatory against Mumsnet.

I've archived.

Article is a load of tedious wank, as you'd expect.

'In this study, however, we excavate what it means to write like a GC by analyzing how GC forum users rely on reactionary language and deploy storytelling practices in ways that calcify their anti-trans ideologies as personal and natural while rendering transgender people as anti-feminist, dangerous, and monstrous. To identify how GC groups perform political mythmaking and construct extremist identities, we undertook a computationally assisted discursive analysis of two popular GC forums: Ovarit and Mumsnet’s “Feminism: Sex & Gender” board (abbreviated to “FSG”). Through comparative platform discourse analysis, we analyzed over 80k posts and comments scraped from Ovarit and over 60k posts and comments scraped from Mumsnet (Burgess and Matamoros-Fernández 2016; Lewis and Marwick 2017)'

The only mildly amusing thing about it is the name of the Journal.

BATS.

“I Took a Deep Breath and Came Out as GC”: Gender Critical Storytelling, Radicalization, and Discursive Practice on Ovarit and Mumsnet

Following the closure of the anti-trans subreddit r/GenderCritical, gender critical (GC) internet users have migrated to more obscure, invite-only spaces. A side-effect of this GC dispersal is that activity in online anti-trans spaces has become increa...

Have not read the report yet (not enough hours in today)

Was wondering if there could be a parallel piece with they's Python tools pointed at Reddit?

The mind boggles at what useful nuggets could be divined from that cesspool of messages

Thankyou for posting this. I was scrolling away hoping for some clarity and felt a bit too shy to ask for a link. And then you appeared. And it's everything I was hoping it would be 😁

In the original thread (I can't remember which one, only that it was a Friday night) it appeared out of the blue and the visiting TRA was completely blindsided by it, clearly could not figure out how he should react to it, it was too funny.

GreenFriedTomato · 08/11/2025 22:47

@Igneococcus if anyone could supply a link to that thread I'd be most grateful. Looking at you Queen @Boiledbeetle

I've been away for a while womanning. Not the sexy glamorous womanly stuff of dreams but the shitty real life womanning.

I could do with a laugh

GreenFriedTomato · 08/11/2025 22:48

Snap. Cross posted. Thankyou

Whoever developed 'BATS' should really have thought much harder about the name...
Bulletin of Applied Transgender Studies (Holistic, Integrated, Turgid), perhaps?

Yes! 👏

FallenSloppyDead2 · 08/11/2025 22:58

This study relied on a computationally-assisted discourse analysis of data collected from FSG and Ovarit using Python notebooks developed by one of the authors.

Monty Python?

SinnerBoy · 08/11/2025 23:04

Double blind peer review, eh? Does that mean he got Michael Cashman to wear a blindfold and a tattie sack and press one of two buttons?

Mumsnet is a pit of transphobic hate?

Button 1: Yes
Button 2: Affirmative.

The PB Berge is short for Persephone Blue. Probably shouldn’t ask but what is the difference between trans gaming and other types of gaming?

I just chuckled remembering a Billy Moore video when he went filming around Manchester and came across a TRA protest.
He got chatting to a tim who introduced himself as Persephone and he just didn't get it.
Kept saying sorry what? Stephanie? Pstephanie?

A trans family member chose their new name and it was something like Raven Fire Godiva, not Tracy or Nicola.
All these fantasy themed names suggest something

moto748e · 08/11/2025 23:25

The massive impact of video games in the last couple of decades, as well as general social contagion, has to be a big factor.

PB Berge also has studied transphobia in Dungeons and Dragons. Bless him.

Surely D&D 5e is positively queer as fuck?

Also 'calcify' ?!

These 'research' projects would be so much more interesting if the results weren't a foregone conclusion andthe entire premise as biased as the BBC?

FuckOffMadison · 08/11/2025 23:29

Storytelling or talking about real life experiences? They really like to stretch the meaning of language don't they 🙄

Oh...and the little twat is very welcome to scrape this username

The Python programming language was named after Monty Python, as it happens.

So an article titled:
“I Took a Deep Breath and Came Out as GC”
Gender Critical Storytelling, Radicalization, and Discursive Practice on Ovarit and Mumsnet

in a journal called BATS

with an author named Persephone Blue.

Are we sure this isn't a missing sketch from the BBC archives🤔

Well yes, we can be sure, because it’s not something funny that people will be quoting 50 years hence.

@ArabellaSaurus Tedious and lying wank.

Edited to add an afterthought; can there be True Wank?

Yes Minister?

I think it's one of those irregular verbs.

I speak my truth.
You have your opinions.
Those Mumsnet GC-types engage in myth-making.

JudgeBread · 09/11/2025 00:25

Tedious Wank sounds like a screamo band name as well as being what Madison was probably doing while writing his little article.

I also agree AI scrapers should leave Mumsnet alone. AI, IMHO, is junk enough as is without training it on half a trillion words on how bad trans people apparently are.

These weren't AI scrapers. These were supposedly academics, although I'm not sure what in.

AI scraping MN would have the advantage of putting women's voices and thoughts into a male-created language model, countering some of the blind spots that form when men design things. "Invisible Women" talks about how when data includes only men, women are harmed.
