Update on LAVA - if they weren't under a gag order this is.

November 3rd 2025

"Dear family, friends and all our supporters,

We urgently need your support to cover the increasing cost of our court case.

Our new cost estimates are looking much closer to $125,000 — far beyond anything we imagined when we first took our stand in 2021, filing a Human Rights Commission complaint over our exclusion from Wellington Pride.

This week, on the 4th and 5th of November, both sides will deliver their closing statements. Our KC, Nicolette Levy, has worked tirelessly to prepare and present our case before the Human Rights Review Tribunal — arguing that LAVA’s belief that women are adult human females and that lesbians are same-sex, not same-gender, attracted is both reasonable and deserving of protection as a political opinion under the Human Rights Act.

A strict court embargo prevents us from explaining the reasons for the huge surge in costs — we have been told that even the briefest of public comment about the case could risk us being held in contempt of Court. We will let you know as soon as we can!

In an opinion piece in the NZ Listener, Retired Judge David Harvey says the gag on discussion “makes a mockery of open justice”, comparing it to the Inquisition and Star Chambers. Read more here"

The opinion piece from the retired Judge is interesting, but mostly about the history of the Inquisition and Star Chamber. He does link to another article, written by a journalist who's had her accreditation removed because she wrote this piece.

“Expert witness” contradicted in LAVA vs Pride case

LAVA are really up against it, they're not just fighting for justice, they're having to fight against the justice system to get it. 😠

The dishonesty of these trans activists constantly amazes me.

borntobequiet · 03/11/2025 07:33

Utterly sickening. What is wrong with New Zealand? I’m not in a wonderful financial position right now but will garden for this.

TwoLoonsAndASprout · 03/11/2025 09:46

Gardened!

I donated previously and will add some more now. It wouldn’t surprise me if it turns out that the additional costs were ‘engineered’ to try and price LAVA out of court.

It’s pretty standard lawfare tactics. As practiced by oligarchs and shady companies to deflect oversight and punish anyone that dares ask questions.

anyolddinosaur · 03/11/2025 15:17

Googling LAVA new zealand will find a garden. At current rates of exchange 25 NZ dollars is just under £11 and 100 NZ dollars around £43.50. At the moment there is an upward trend for the pound so by the time it hits your card statement it could cost you a bit less.

Xiaoxiong · 03/11/2025 17:22

I can’t find it! Is it on the usual sites?

moto748e · 03/11/2025 17:29

Wot @anyolddinosaur said worked for me, took me straight to the org's website, and all the details are there.

Xiaoxiong · 03/11/2025 18:20

Ahh their own website. Got it. I was adding names of the usual gardening sites on the end and couldn’t find it.

Helen Joyce is in NZ doing a speaking tour with free speech union - I went to see her last night, she was awesome as ever. First time I've been to anything like that, I'm so pleased I went. Today this popped up on Facebook - she was intending going to the last day of the Lava tribunal but was banned from attending. Another journalist has already been banned from attending, I think due to not being a 'proper' journalist. Mainstream media is not covering this at all.

Thanks for the link, I'm glad FSU are taking an interest in this appalling censorship, I hope their letter has some effect. The draconia measures imposed by the tribunal should've been a enough to attract the attention of MSM, the fact that they continue to ignore this is proof that they can no longer be considered a press corp but bought and paid for properganderist.

@FizzyLemons surprised but pleased to see this article in the NZ Herald (and not behind a paywall!).
https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/human-rights-review-tribunal-hears-final-arguments-in-lava-vs-wellington-pride-festival-dispute/DPVRIEK3J5ACVNSZM7UMNERKAI/

I'll do some more gardening tomorrow.

Thanks for the link, the bit that first jumped out was "a phrase used by British anti transgender campaigner Kellie-Jay Keen-Minshull (also known as Posie Parker)."

It seem like a balanced account, although I don't know what went on in the hearing so I can't say for sure, but any journalist who refers to a women's right's campaigner as anti-trans cannot be said to be unbiased.

At least one MSM outlet has covered it though, so that's good.

My heart did sink when they referred to KJK as anti-trans, but had they described her as a women's rights activist I think that would have stopped more of the people who need to read the article from reading.

Thanks Feejoah. I hadn't seen that article. I also bawked at the KJK reference. I guess that's how she has been consistently referred to in the Herald since her visit here. I'm surprised not more was made of men identifying themselves as lesbians, but we are only getting one person's summary and not the actual transcript.
