Jenny Lindsay 'Hounded'

I've never posted on here before, though a long-time lurker and fellow-traveller.

I was at the Wigtown Book Festival last week and went to a session by the Scottish poet Jenny Lindsay about her book 'Hounded'. She had already been cancelled by the Edinburgh BF (and everyone else) so Wigtown was brave to give her a platform, though it was not without a considerable amount of unease, I'd heard.
Essentially JL, who was a well-regarded and literary-prizewinning poet was cancelled socially, professionally, and financially because years ago she wrote a tweet criticising the level of verbal violence expressed by trans activists. Since then it's been the usual story of threat, insults, shunning by ex friends and colleagues - we all know the sort of thing.

Anyway, there was hall full of people sitting there like nodding away in unison and people who'd never met exchanging words as if we had finally found our safe place. At the end of the talk she thanked Wigtown saying it was the only place that had given her a platform and a huge spontaneous cheer erupted.

So this is really just to say, please buy 'Hounded'. She's a brave and gallus besom.

Its an excellent read

Jenny is an amazing woman! To have all that madness and vitriol and keep going?! Wow!!

WarriorN · 06/10/2025 20:22

I’ve not read it but had the pleasure of meeting her two years ago at a local terf gathering. She read her poems but didn’t want the recording shared at that point. I’m so glad she’s feeling more able to talk openly and actually start to gain her livelihood back.

when I’ve more time to read it’s one I want to, certainly!

At least one paper recognised her being invited to speak.

Speaking at Wigtown, Ms Lindsay said: “This is the first time a gender critical author has been asked to speak at a Scottish book festival.”

I can also throughly recommend her chapter 'A Hounding in Scottish Literature' in the book 'The Women Who Wouldn't Wheesht'.

She has been dauntless in the face of a vicious campaign against her.

I read an article today about Russell T Davies, possibly picking up an award, complaining about cowardice and censorship. I doubt he was thinking about Jenny Lindsay.

I've got some birthday money.

DamnTheCheesemongers · 06/10/2025 20:35

I have it on my TBR —mountain— pile, I’m bumping it to the top now!

ArabellaSaurus · 06/10/2025 20:46

A brave and eloquent woman.

Jenny Lindsay has a good article in The Scotsman today about her time as a teacher - “How the ‘No Debate’ mantra allowed basic human truth to become unsayable in our schools”

Make sure you read to the end.

RapidOnsetGenderCritic · 06/10/2025 21:53

Hounded is the best book I have read in the past three years (and way better than those by trans authors!)

Op, thought you might appreciate this -

'I have just been alerted to a Mumsnet thread about my Wigtown appearance. The original poster describes me as a "brave and gallus besom." I would like that to go on my next book cover. Hahaha. 👏😂'

She's amazing. Sometimes on X when she posts you can really feel how damaging this has all been for her. I'm really glad she got a platform. Good for Wigton.

WhatterySquash · 07/10/2025 09:15

I was there too OP. It was a brilliant event and I was so happy for her that she got to do it, and that it was so well-attended too. What a star.

Though she’s ended up changing direction when she didn’t want to, I think she’s a great non-fiction writer - she uses words and arguments to fillet out bullshit and pin down the truth, and puts everything about this mess under a merciless spotlight. Exactly what’s needed.

I am going to buy a copy of hounded right now. It's funny how the just be kind brigade are anything but. This woman was just calling out hateful misogynistic abuse, because there's no other word for it. All her so called friends and colleagues who cancelled her should hang their heads in shame . I wish her all the best for the future and keep strong.

It's a good book, probably the best I've read around this general subject.

I looked up Hounded on German Amazon on Sunday, and noticed the price had dropped from 40 € or something for the hardcover, to 15€. Put it in the shopping cart and went to bed. Yesterday it was back to 49€, this morning at 15€ again. Wonder what's going on there. I bought a hardcover copy this morning 🙂.
