He might be a very intelligent man, the fact that he has risen through the ranks like this implies that he has something going for him. That is unfair as a generalisation.

In the 1970s lots of people didn't have the opportunity to go to university.
Lots of bright people in engineering started as apprentices and worked their way up.

He may well be everything you say, but I worked for a similar company and some of the ex apprentices went on to be very competent senior people.
