New trans rules go too far, says Labour deputy leadership frontrunner

The new trans rules are “not right” and should be reviewed by MPs, one of Labour’s deputy leadership candidates has said.

Lucy Powell appeared to criticise the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) guidance on transgender issues, which has advised that workplaces provide protected single-sex spaces.

The Manchester MP is odds-on favourite to replace Angela Rayner as Labour’s deputy leader next month, and has pledged to offer a critical voice on the Government from outside the Cabinet.

Her opponent, Bridget Phillipson, the Education Secretary, is viewed as Downing Street’s preferred candidate for the job.

What are the "new trans rules" Lucy?

TheProfoundlyPeculiarPointOfPete · 01/10/2025 09:49

"Trans rules" - why is everyone so inarticulate about the rather unsurprising ruling that a word means what it says in the dictionary?

There’s more in the telegraph from Lisa Nandy who believes trans women should be able to compete alongside biological women in ‘some sports’ (unspecified sports and it’s not for the government to tell sporting bodies what to do etc etc). https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2025/10/01/trans-athletes-should-compete-some-womens-sports/

do these handmaidens not realise they are going to get themselves voted out of office if they carry on man-pleasing? It’s just so insulting towards all the ordinary women who have had to spend their time and money challenging all of these whim-based rules that nobody ever voted for. Nandy and co are serving a small but powerful minority of men. Nobody else.

There are NO NEW RULES you idiot. Just women taking back what always was and is rightfully theirs. Just fuck off with letting men near vulnerable women and girls.

It's a shame that we can't pick and choose which laws we adhere to, isn't it?

Waiting to see what 'trans rules' are. Don't suppose they'll bother themselves to explain. Sounds like they're just trying to keep trans people on side and be called a good egg on Reddit
I wish they'd stop 'waiting for EHRC ' guidance' on the SC judgement. Nothing changed you twits.
I'll explain it if they'd like to contact me (disclaimer: IANAL) Grin

Maybe they can get “Barbie Kardashian” to come on over and become their spokesman. I’m sure he will do a marvellous and unparalleled job of fighting for TIMs rights in female spaces…

Well, I suppose this is the kind of deep thinking I'd expect from the woman who gave us the Ed Stone in 2015.

Though having said that, Lucy Powell is one of those MPs, like Lisa Nandy, who had a reputation for being bright when they started out, but just seem to have become more tin-eared and gaffe-prone with every year. It's as if being on the Labour front bench makes you stupider.
