Trans athletes should be able to compete in some women’s sports, suggests Nandy

It’s an article in today’s Telegraph.

A slippery slope or just trying to distance herself from decisions made by sporting bodies?

OP posts:
Woompund · 01/10/2025 09:40

Nandy believes that male rapists should be allowed to serve their sentences in women's prisons if they want to.

Greyskybluesky · 01/10/2025 09:42

Trans women should be able to compete in some women’s sports, suggests Nandy

Edited to add: Apparently she says the issue of trans athletes competing alongside biological women is "still not clear cut"

Upstartled · 01/10/2025 09:50

Nandy was at it yesterday and on Monday Powell was trying to manoeuvre the ECHR protection of single sex spaces back into the realm of debate, saying it had gone too far.

Labour seems to have renewed their gender agenda.

TheNightingalesStarling · 01/10/2025 09:54

I agree. Trans men (i.e biological women) who are not taking male hormones should be allowed to compete in womens sports.

And trans women i.e biological men should be allowed to compete in mens sports and mens sport should provide a culture that is safe and free of harassment to let them do so.

Just posted about this on the Powell thread. If the Labour leadership doesn’t get a grip on this nonsense, they are stuffed at the next election. Nobody wants this apart from a minority of controlling men.

EweSurname · 01/10/2025 10:01

How can MPs ignore the law as it is and worse than that, refuse to acknowledge the impact on women that their pronouncements would have? I find it so heartbreaking and infuriating that men are prioritised time and time again.

RoyalCorgi · 01/10/2025 10:01

She's not the brightest.

Upstartled · 01/10/2025 10:05

This is in the Telegraph article:

"I really strongly feel like we need a robust and transparent parliamentary conversation about that, because when we’re looking at applying the law as parliamentarians, we should have a say on that and that’s something I’ll be pushing for as well"

Fimofriend · 01/10/2025 10:08

Then I assume that Nandy must be a neurotic, immature, pick-me and let's kick all other women under the bus - type of person.

Great news! Yes Lisa, why don't you, as a member of the government in power, look at applying the law

Yeah, sorry, that was Powell, not Nandy. Just replying to the question of how she can justify ignoring the law. The answer seems to be that she thinks she is the law.

and some of the article

The Culture Secretary said there were some sports in which it was “perfectly possible to include everybody” and still keep competition both safe and fair.

Women’s sports have been warned that they will face legal action if they fail to ban trans players after the Supreme Court ruled in April that a woman was defined as a “biological female”.

Individual sporting bodies are currently deciding how to interpret the judgment, which will determine how trans athletes take part in future.

The Football Association published a statement within weeks of the ruling to say trans women would no longer be able to play in women’s football in England. Both England Netball and the England and Wales Cricket Board have made the same decision.

But Ms Nandy said the issue of trans athletes competing alongside biological women was still not clear cut, despite the April ruling.

Maybe she is referring to some equestrian events and to ultra endurance running?

Or maybe she needs to personally sit down with sports scientists who can give her the science behind it all.

GoldThumb · 01/10/2025 10:21

Fuck sake 🙄
Why is she so desperate to pander to these men?

Helleofabore · 01/10/2025 10:25

Having read the article, I think Labour is playing a game of fence sitting again. It could be just Nandy. But it might be a wider issue.

She acknowledges there are issues. But she just keeps repeating that it is up to sports federations and that the government should not have be leading on this. Then repeats about inclusion.

Either way, the government needs to take a lead on this because of the EA .

Greyskybluesky · 01/10/2025 10:28

But haven't many sports federations and bodies already taken the lead and made it clear that women's sports are for female people?

I'm unsure why she's saying it's not clear cut?

Misread. Nothing to see here 🙄

Sorry. I obvs misread.

TempestTost · 01/10/2025 10:34

As far as the nitty gritty, I think it should be sporting bodies who decide this, just like it always has been.

Which means most sports are separate, and a very few, like equestrian, are not.

The bodies are the ones in the best position to make such a determination and I would argue that up until 5 minutes ago I had no beef with any of them.

It's been the demand for trans inclusion where the sports are not already mixed sex that is the problem. And that is down to what the government allowed people to think the law says and social pressure.

That is what Nandy does not seem to understand. If it's a sport that can be mixed, it is fine. If it can't, you can't allow some men.

Imagine if she had one the Labour leadership!

No worries, the trans labels are designed to confuse people, I find!

AutumnyCrow · 01/10/2025 10:35

That’s Labour stuffed then.

Idiots.

I know you misread... but it does highlight the fact there are people who genuinely think what you thought I said.

I'm not clear on what she's not clear about!

The SC ruling was quite clear.

To appear moderate? To appear kind? To feed into ‘it’s complicated’? And keep the myth of case by case and only ‘some’ sports alive for the party ?
