The story:

'Rex Landy, an outspoken Māori women’s rights advocate and member of Mana Wāhine Kōrero, is facing court action under the Harmful Digital Communications Act after being reported to police by a trans activist over her social media posts.
Landy was arrested in December 2024 after complaints from Daniel Johnston, a fantasy author who identifies as female and is known online as “Caitlin Spice.”
Police first contacted Landy in 2022 and later issued a written warning. “They told me I had to stop saying what I was saying…
The very next day I received a written warning in the post threatening that they had enough to charge me under the Harmful Digital Communications Act 2015.”
In September 2024, Landy was ordered by the court to delete all posts referencing Johnston. She says she deleted everything but claims she missed two posts.
On 18 December, she said police raided her home, seized devices, and charged her with failing to obey a court order.
She was given another charge after Johnston claimed she had indirectly referenced him in a livestream. Prosecutors have ruled out diversion, telling the court she was “in the grip of an ideology,” meaning they view her stance as rigid and unchangeable rather than a one-off lapse, and therefore undeserving of leniency. Landy reportedly faces up to three months in jail or a $50,000 fine.

What an absolute travesty. Ultimately this is a white man oppressing an indigenous woman, just wearing a dress while he does it 😡

I have been following this since I saw it on twitter earlier this week.

I remember Rex's video submission to the consultation that the NZ government had. She was absolutely fearless. I cannot believe that this has happened to her.

I'm sure he'll claim he's an oppressed minority, and the irony will be completely lost on him.

What an incredible woman. It’s so unbelievably rubbish that the law enforcement there could look at the case and still come down against her - absolute madness. She’s got her head screwed on straight and I’m so impressed that she’s not taking any shit from him despite everything he’s doing.

Also Christ his tweets are harrowing - I don’t envy the people who have to clean up after that man. Just disgusting.

I laughed out loud to her response about ancestral trans, and so did my male housemate. But what a filthy bastard Johnston is.

I’m pleased for her. Good luck to them getting her to grovel.

This must be some relief. But the punishment is in the process for cases such as this. Rex has been a brave voice. I hope that she is ok.

What Helle said. Hope Rex is ok and has lots of support. It must feel like such an injustice, but so glad she has avoided jail.

Having seen Rex in action in her videos, I reckon they will be the ones grovelling once she’s finished with them.
