If you don’t look at the video and just listen to the audiobook his voice is not even vaguely feminine. I know there are women with deep voices, but not like this.

*audio. No idea why my autocarrot said audiobook

have only read the OP but want to give some thoughts before i go back and read the article/thread.

I am ex military. I was in the military from the mid 80s into the 90s. A lot of my friends were treated abominably as Lesbians and only now are receiving their official apologies and reparations. I am happy for them at the same time as i am still incandescent with rage about how they were treated. Not least because there was ALWAYS a "joke" about the WRAC (as it was) being full of lesbians. And any time we turned down some fat obnoxious drunk squaddie's advances we were dismissed as "lezzers". OK to joke about. But not OK to serve alongside?

We had big fat squaddies alongside us - and as long as they passed the basic fitness, trade training and other military training they were relatively ok to work with. Tose qualifications to work included up-to-date vaccinations and dental work. As soon as there was any ongoing medical treatment they were no longer classed as FE (Forward Everywhere - as in: ready to deploy at the drop of a hat) and became a liability as they deprived us of one warm body that could be deployed.

Aside of issues of single sex spaces (I was put on extras more than once for being caught in the male accommodation - having a conjugal visit with the person i was married to while waiting for a married quarter) which i Have Thoughts on, i would be ok working alongside anyone who was competent and fit the criteria. If trans people are having to dilate, or take drugs (supplies have to be ensured) or anything else - then they are not FE and shouldn't be deployed. IN some cases a lengthly period of not being FE should lead to dismissal from service. We can't compromise on security.

have now read article: can i just say that easy for a man to be a col, not so easy (but easier now than i my day) for a woman. And that alongside my lesbian friends, we had one disappeared from basic training for having a tattoo - that was under her knickers, so would never ever be seen unless she were to be fully naked. It was the size of my thumbnail. So MEH.

Let alone what would happen if we stood up in front of 450 people in a bra.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 21/02/2026 13:17

You'd hope that given the global security threats our military are only focused on being an efficient, effective military presence.

Unfortunately as the unhinged man in the bra demonstrated, there are a lot of military men happy to be sidetracked by fetishes - some at the very top of the military and responsible for making this such a focus.

Unnecessarily dismissive about our chefs and mechanics tbh. I am not sure what part of job specific fitness tests isn’t clear to you? Look it up yourself. Same fitness tests to join the marines, SBS, SF. As it should be, not about gender but about ability to complete the job.

I’ve literally answered this in a previous comment.

It is actually actively encouraged to use personnel’s rank since it’s seen as earned. Report writing for example is upon the individuals preference whether theyd want their reporting officer to write gender or rank to avoid any unconscious (or conscious) bias at board. And obviously people do use pronouns, what I have maintained is that it’s much less of a big issue due to the regular use of rank.

Edited

so now the ACC is a thing of the past - who does catering on deployment/exercise?

Btowngirl · 25/09/2025 15:05

Look, everyone is entitled to whatever opinion they like on the matter. I am not here to argue with strangers on the internet, I literally came here with some lived experience/knowledge that I feel makes the whole argument a little less inflammatory. And partially as reassurance that not all women in the armed forces are being subjected to X Y and Z. It’s backfired on me as it seems like I’m now something else for people to be aggy about, and some of the lines of questioning I am clearly not going to have the answers to. So I am going to check out of the thread now and you ladies have a nice day.

surprise!

Who are ARRSE and why do they not realise that their acronym is snorty-funny?

have you ever met a squaddie?

CapacityBrown · 21/02/2026 13:35

No attempt at changing his voice. Makes an excuse to show off his breast enhancements. Very clear that he is only interested in how his body looks and not interested in changing his behaviour. Maintains his voice to maintain his authority.

Brefugee · 21/02/2026 13:48

prior to joining up i was in Germany as a dependent and i got a job working at the office dealing with married quarters and family welfare. These offices were often run by ex-officers, and were always (as is correct) referred to as Rank (usually at least Major) plus surname.

Anyway i answered bosses phone to have this Major X shouting at me that my boss, Major Y, hadn't answered his phone, hadn't replied to some memos and where the hell was he blah blah. So i took Major X's name and number and left note for boss.

Next morning i got in and my boss said "Major X was really angry" and when i said "gosh yes, he gave me a real roasting" my boss laughed and said "yes lots of people make that mistake. Major X is a woman". And when i finally met her, she was one of those Tweed-Suited women in sensible shoes, and was perfectly womanly in everything apart from her voice. She apologised to me and told me that she used her voice to her advantage on the phone "never let anyone know you are a woman until the last minute, they take you more seriously that way". And i have used that ever since.

have you ever met a squaddie?

Ok, point taken! 😀

LeftieRightsHoarder · 22/02/2026 01:08

Show the colonel some respect by recognising that men are simply better at womaning than we are. Stripping to our underwear in front of an audience would give us the level of credibility that he obviously enjoys.
