Prosecutors urge strangulation survivors to come forward as charges reach record high

... data released by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) shows a record number of charges of strangulation reaching courts since the standalone legislation was introduced three years ago.

In the last recorded three-month period, nearly 2,400 charges were prosecuted by the CPS.

Sobering statistics in that piece - good that they are prosecuting and want to do more and raise awareness.

I do wonder why any human thinks its ok to strangle another human. It doesn't link to sex or thrills to me, it's violent.

I wonder what proportion of cases will go forward to court, and I wonder what the male/female distributions are. Because I also wonder how this compares to prosecutions for rape, and whether prosecutions for strangulation will also be as tiny a proportion of reports as prosecutions for rape.

IDK - remember in the old days rape used to be categorised as sadistic, anger or power rapes; and although the percentage of sadistic rapes was the lowest at around 5%, they accounted for the highest percentage of successful prosecutions, because of the amount of physical evidence.

One significant difference (I think) may be that consent is of limited use as a defence, in particular if there is injury (the link contains a further link to more details for prosecutors). So it may be less ‘her word against his’ than rape?
