Who's got their copy of Robert Galbraith's (JKR) latest?

Just picked mine up from my local bookshop. And my local Waterstone's had a whole window full of the book, with a special half-price offer.

I have started reading it; slipping into another story of characters who feel like old friends.

(Heretical opinion: I think Ms Rowling is a better writer in the Strike series than Harry Potter, but she still needs an editor.)

The last one was pretty intense. JKR really made that world of the cult feel very real. I think her experiences over the last few years informed the way she created the atmosphere and thinking of the cult.

This is a similar cult that she may have been aware of.

I've just brought it home. I was in our small town bookshop early on Tuesday and THEY DID NOT HAVE IT. Still, all is well now. I decided to re-read a Marian Babson crime novel from the 90s while I was waiting, so I need to read the last few pages of that, and then I'll be in.

Got it today on audible. I didn’t realise it’s the 8th so I’ve missed one somewhere. I don’t suppose it matters?

I think it probably depends which one your missed. If you’ve read / listened to The Running Grave, which is the previous one, you’re probably ok - if not, I’d do that one first.

I hadn't realised she doesn't have an editor but she does need one. In one book someone had a tattoo on his left arm & then suddenly it was on his right arm ...

I'm only a few chapters into this new one, but I'm ready puzzled by Robin's temperature being expressed in Fahrenheit, which is no longer usual in the UK, and also hospital notes being at the end of a bed in a London hospital. Major, and even minor, hospitals normally computerise notes now.

I'll await someone telling me their hospital still has paper notes.

But - still a riveting book so far.

The book is set ten years ago. Does that make a difference?...I am not a health care professional.....

Just finished it!

And now having to sit there like this 🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐 as DH is only on chapter 15 (and knowing the speed he listens, unlikely to finish before the end of September!)

LizzieSiddal · 06/09/2025 21:47

I’m on charter 23 and very much enjoying it. However, I had to go back and skim read again to write all the character names down as getting so confused with who is who.
I never used to be like this, think my brain has been frazzled by the menopause!

I have 7 hours left of the audio book.

No spoilers but she has put something in especially for us. I am sure you will all spot it.

Omg who is 'us'? TERFs? Mumsnetters? I'm on chapter 29 and I haven't spotted it, I don't think 😭

BerfyTigot · 06/09/2025 21:54

Got mine on the release date too. On audible. Really enjoying it 😍

ThursdayLastWeek · 07/09/2025 16:30

I’m on chapter 44 on audible.
Robert Glenister really is a fabulous narrator.

Agree with PP about Strikes funny little asides!

TERFs and MNetters in particular. It happens in Ironbridge

I've almost finished it! I'm really enjoying it. I spotted JKR's wee gift ❤️

Ooh looking forward to finding this!
Think I am a bit of an outlier, I really enjoyed Cuckoo's Calling!

EsmeWeatherwaxHatpin · 09/09/2025 08:31

I liked it too @Pudmyboy

Im annoyed as I’m approaching halfway through and I’ve had to come to the office today. As much as love JKR I am not lugging that tome across the city.

MonkeyTennis34 · 09/09/2025 08:36

Me!
I ordered back in February.
Loving it, magnificent!!
Another success JK 🙌🏻

I've listened to the whole series on Audible and I really struggle with this. I love how it's read, but the big disadvantage is not being able to flick back a few pages when you realise, "hang on, who the hell is this person again?!" The audio books would hugely benefit from a spoiler-free character list. When I first started listening to them I found a few online but they were riddled with spoilers annoyingly.

A single sentence chapter summary would be helpful too - the quotes at the beginning of each chapter also make it difficult to navigate back in the audiobook.

SidewaysOtter · 09/09/2025 11:15

I smiled when I saw the reference. I do wonder if she's a secret MNer... (<waves to Jo if you are> )

Anyway, bloody loved the book even if it/my attention did meander in places. I did have to have a little break to let my poor brain catch up a couple of times; more threads than an Axminster carpet!

Oh yes! I knew it when I saw it! I’m loving this one.

LoisGriffinskitchen · 09/09/2025 12:46

I’m loving it…got it on Audible . I’m on Chapter 8. Not disappointed so far.

i was lucky enough to meet Robert Glenister last year so had a good chat with him about the books. I was shocked when he said it only took him two weeks to narrate them. He did say that he expected this current one to take longer as the books are getting bigger. Then again JKR did that with Harry Potter too.

i absolutely adore her.

At a time when so many children struggle across the world being able to escape into a magical world must be wonderful for them. Books are always fab for this.

im not on the Stately Homes threads but let’s just say books were my absolute joy as a child.

Mine arrived yesterday just in time for my annual leave. Trying to avoid reading spoilers

I loved Cuckoo's Calling too! I was completely grabbed as soon as I started -- luckily for me I only read it about 2 months ago (I'd been reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets to my 6 year old and thought it was, at heart, a brilliantly plotted detective story, and it made me curious about JKR's adult crime fiction) so I had 6 more books to get stuck into immediately and then only a short wait for Hallmarked Man. They're like crack to me 😂

Just got it today, agree that she needs a good edit. Don’t need to know every time Strike’s stump hurts or he has a fag.

But she’s a great storyteller.

I kinda like it. for me it's just so immersive and i don't mind that it's taking it's sweet time.

I loved the Ink Black Heart - seeing JKR's insider knowledge of fandoms was absolutely fascinating - and the Jewish caricature reference was hilarious!

REDB99 · 09/09/2025 17:07

I’ve got mine and am just about to continue reading! I love them! Also love supporting JKR, thank goodness us women have her.

Interesting - I really didn’t like that one at all (nor helped by it being spoiled for me by a TRA on Twitter) - it’s the one I leave out when I do a series read-read.
