Gay rights group barred from Brighton pub over gender-critical views

A gender-critical group is preparing to take legal action against a Brighton pub that cancelled its meeting over its “political ideology”.

The group, Human Gay Male (HGM), provides social events for gay men who do not believe in gender ideology.

That is the belief that gender is dictated not by biological sex, but self-identification.

The gender-critical group claims that they booked a room at a Brighton pub for a small event in early August, but the venue later cancelled, citing a problem with political ideology.

The Lion and Lobster pub attributed the decision to its policy of barring bookings for “any groups promoting political ideologies or views”.
This appeared to follow the pub being tipped off about the beliefs of HGM by a group called Terf Watch Brighton, which said on Instagram that “Human Gay Male tried to come to Brighton. They aren’t welcome here”.

(For a belief to be considered a protected characteristic it must be cogent, serious, cohesive, and important, and it must be worthy of respect in a democratic society, not incompatible with human dignity, and not conflict with the fundamental rights of others.
Obviously, “Gender Critical” views do not meet that criteria, but we live under a judiciary that has ruled that they do and we have to deal with the consequences until that gets fixed.)

Not obvious to me at all.

Not obvious to many of us!

Oh do stop complaining. I personally find the writings of a mansplaining sealion quite the turn-on. They make me go all weak-kneed and giddy and feel the need for the strong arms of a man to protect and comfort me.

Anyway, back to reading one of Granny's Georgette Heyer novels.

As said in the OP (always worth checking what facts there are) this isn't about beliefs.

The pub doesn't like their politics.

Not sure there has ever been a court cast about whether gender critical politics are likely to cause a problem

Although the pub claims they never allow political groups to book rooms.

The Lion and Lobster pub attributed the decision to its policy of barring bookings for “any groups promoting political ideologies or views”.

Fair enough , if they have a trans person behind the bar or regular customers they are right to protect those. The same as that pub that refused to serve Tommy ten names , and JD Vance

Sorry, got interuppted.

But if the booking was just a social event not sure that the pub's statement holds true. ie following the Supreme Court ruling a meeting for Gay Men would be covered by the EA.

More than proportionate for gay men wanting to have a meeting for gay men that they say it is only for men (in line with the Supreme Court ruling that sex is biological).

A trans-identifying person behind the bar doesn't justify unlawful discrimination. Nor does a cohort of 'trans' regulars.

A pub has a legal right to decide who enters their bar. That's why they can say no trainers , football shirts etc

"Gay rights group"

You mean gender critical group.

Even a pub has to obey the Equality Act 2010. A public house is a service provider and the landlord has no any legal right whatsoever to choose who enters the bar on the basis of any protected characteristic.

Any other characteristic? Trainers and football shirts? No problem. Fair game. But not race, sex, colour, gender reassignment, belief etc.

ie gay as used commonly to describe same sex attracted

So covered by the protected characteristic of sex and of sexuality.

Is this what Menno mentioned in his video about Brighton Pride?

The advice to the pub and it's owners would be FAFO. But that's only according to Gen Z.

Bugger Gen Z. The pub and it's owners have chosen to Fuck Around and Find Out..

skilpadde · 30/08/2025 22:56

A pub can easily ban football shirts / colours, because support of a football team has not been established as a protected belief. It was attempted mind, by a Rangers fan, but he failed (see McClung vs Doosan Babcock).

Any pub that thinks it can ban gender critical groups the same way it bans football shirts will soon find they’ve hung their actions on a really shoogly peg, and had best anticipate the consequences.

The Terf Watch snitches claim the right to speak for Brighton. On what grounds? Brighton is a very big place. I have relations there whose identity with the place goes back before the General Strike at least, and they have nothing to do with this claim which has even less to do with anything than William de Warrene's claim because he was a friend of the Bastard. I've got a better claim though no longer resident than these "We don't want you here" idiots.
Football between railway staff and police in front of the station with my grandad, bat and trap on the Level (also Grandad organised), marching with the BB 13th (my dad - there were a lot of BB, an enormous camp every year at Glynde - I bet not many of their alumni agree with TW), watching the V1s flying up the valley over the Lewes road below her (my granny, from her maisonette off Hartington Road). I used to gaze at the serried ranks of terraces and wonder where on earth all the people worked. The gas works? The dust destructor? Greens dessert factory? Hotels? the piers? There just didn't seem enough for the thousands of people there. And there aren't enough for the TWs to speak for. 20? 40? 100? For the thousands of people descended from the original inhabitants who've been there since before this idiocy raised it's head. Do they speak for them?
They'll carry on as they used to, ignoring the race gangs (horse race) and the hotels doing business with divorce cases, or any thing else suspect. They'll carry on going to the pubs where little Dad sat outside sprinkling salt from blue paper on his Smith's crisps while Grandad drank inside, with a traditional clientele. I never knew my Grandad, who died before I was born of cancer. But I know what he thought of the local hunt who came to whip the workers back from the strike (not apparently to take over the jobs as in some cases.) I think he might have thought these TWs were cut from the same cloth.

If a trans person is upset by gay people being in their pub, they aught to check their homophobia (which is rampant in the trans community), instead of having gay people excluded. If a trans person needs 'protection' from gay people, then the whole of society needs protection from the trans person.

Was 'witch hunt' already taken?

They’re going to be quite busy in October when over a thousand of us will be there for FiLIA, aren’t they? Wot larks!

As a lesbian, who has to resort to LGB only groups, the guys on some pages never gave a stuff about us having to fight off the men in frocks. Now it is happening to them it will be interesting to see how this pans out.

Heavens. The number of posters here wildly - and, perhaps, intentionally - missing the point is breathtaking.

The gay men banned for their gender-critical views

(Such a shame on the "liberal" press that we only find reports like this in the right wing / conservative press)
